Won't startup unless plugged in with replacement battery

Hi,

I have replaced the battery for my laptop, it is exactly the same part model, the problem is it won't start unless I use the power brick, then after it starts I can unplug it and it keeps working unless I shutdown and/or put it into sleep mode.

If I try to turn it on without it being connected to the electricity it goes online for a brief moment then shuts itself down again and after that it won't start unless I use the power cable again.

Looks like the battery is fine, I kept the laptop on for 4 hours with the new battery , I don't get any errors in bios and/or windows battery manager and I have tried almost everything I could find online related to windows configuration, if I use the old battery it works as it should.

If someone's got any hint of could it be I would really appreciate it. I hope it is not the replacement battery because I won't be able to get a new one in a long time (I bought it on ifix US and shipped oversea using a private courier since it couldn't be shipped directly, returning it is not an option for me at the moment)

Solução escolhida

Looks like it got fixed after I enabled on BIOS the option to block sleep mode.

Bios main menu -> power management - > check block sleep

Points to a software/bios issue and this is the only way that I could make it work with the new battery, what I don't understand is why the old battery works without this setting and new one doesn't.

Hi Rafael,

The thing is, a battery isn't just a battery; it includes some electronic circuits as well that have temperature and voltage sensors and allow the motherboard to read those sensors. I'm guessing on your replacement battery the BMS, or Battery Management System, was either incorrectly or incompletely implemented, meaning the aftermarket part doesn't work exactly the same as the original, and thus the problems you're seeing.

At this point you've got three choices.

  1. Live with it as is. No extra cost or effort involved.
  2. Transfer the BMS from your original battery to the replacement. This will allow your new battery to operate the same as the old one did, but it will carry over the old battery's charge history and thus the battery reporting will be incorrect unless you can find a way to reset it. This involves disassembling the BMS, cutting it off the old battery and spot welding it onto the new cells.
  3. Return the battery you got and shop around for a different brand or possibly an OEM replacement.

Hello,

I have exactly same symptoms with XPS 9500 and TWO replacement batteries (one from Chinese, one from European supplier):

- won't turn on sometimes on battery, plugging in resolves the issue

- sometimes dies when switched on in Windows and disconnected from charger

- hibernate/ sleep not working (sometimes)

Draining flea power (power button on 15 sec with battery connector disconnected), CMOS reset DO NOT help.

Honestly l, this behavior is so erratic and so problematic I prefer to switch back to the original battery and live with limited 1,5 battery time - the symptoms disappear when the original battery is used.

Anyone had luck with NEW / replacement battery & XPS 9500?

por
