Replace short flex screen cable (Flexgate)

Does anybody have a guide ( or can point to a giude) for replacing the short screen flex cable - there is an iFixit guide for the screen removal but this doesn't access this short cable. Thanks in anticipation

Are you sure the issue is the cable? While there where some reports of the Fn model also faced the cable issue the majority of the cases where the Touch Bar models. Does your displays image look like this when you tilt the display?

Or, it may just wink out. If you have odd colors or bars that is a different issue.

As far as replacing this cable I’ll worn you unless you are a brain surgeon it is by far the most difficult repair and you need to have built up the skill working on a ton of these displays.

The bottomline here, it’s just easier and less effort to just replace the display or find someone with the skills who has done a few. Even still there’s a sizable chance they will fail.

FYI - 2017 Fn MacBook FlexGate saga in Australia so while Apple continues to deny extended warranty on the 2017 systems which also use the exact same display assembly. Apple has quietly repaired many as warranty exceptions. But! You will need to go directly to an Apple Store and catch them on a good mood time/day mid morning on Tuesday appears to be the best window. Sadly, your window may have come to an end as with the new year this will likely be the last year of this system being serviced by Apple as it will be added to obsolete product list

Hi , the backlight goes off when the display is open about 45°, doesn't have the footlight appearance. I've got as far as removing the screen but looks like this short flex cable is under the MoBo so although the iFixit instructions suggest they are for the short flex cable they do not appear to go far enough! Are there further instructions?

Thanks

@Graham Pontin - Sorry we don’t have anything as it’s too much of a bear for 95% of the people served here. Even I don’t do it! Tried once and that was it. Some people have gotten the spare cable from China (no longer offered) and some innovative Chinese folks had a custom cable made that allowed someone to splice in but this effort only bought a bit of time as the thicker cable would just fail again.

I would visit an Apple Store and show crocodile tears and sadness of the loss of your most dependable companion. Do make the effort to clean the system so it’s spotless san the normal wear & tear. Be pleasant! And if the first poeple fails you ask for the manager and work the issue up the food chain. It will take some effort but that is the only way I have found people have succeeded for Apples failure otherwise… you’ll need a new display assembly 13” Fn MacBook Pro Complete Display - Space Grey (16/17)
