How to get external moniter from mac, but mac has cracked screen?

I have a MacBook 13" unibody aluminum. The screen is cracked, and i can't see anything when its on.It still start's but i can only see white light. I want to see if anything else is damaged by hooking it up to another moniter. The question is how do i know what to press and where when the laptop i cant see???

Opções

Connect a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to your MacBook and plug into an external monitor and hit the start button. If you have an external keyboard I would hook that up also.

You can probably find a cheaper one at your local computer store.
