May I copy my file from a MacBook with hardware issue?

Hi, my macbook doesn't start anymore. I think it's an hardware issue because I smell like something has burnt. I can't open it and repair because it's under warranty. Do you think I have any chance to copy my latest file like via usb c or some other way? I don't have a backup since months :(

@giu23 Unfortunately, the only way of getting data off, is to have the device running, but since you’ve smelled something burning you should really!! unplug the charger (if you haven’t already).

What happened that could have made a smell of burnt electronics? Power surge, brownout, etc?

I have a 2021 16” M1 Pro, and it has been plugged in to the charger since December last year. Something must have happened in order for this to happen. If it’s something you didn’t cause, ie manufacturing defect, warranty should cover it. If it’s been exposed to liquid or has been damaged in any way, warranty is out the window.

Neither the technician that is authorized from apple can take the data opening physically the mac even though it doesn't work? No liquid or crash from table, nothing happened. I really can't understand. Previous day I was using it with a program of rendering 3D and than as always I unplugged it from the electricity.

Then next morning I tried to turn it on and nothing. It just gave less than one second with the sound of turning on but then everything stopped and never gave any other signal. The magsafe blinks in orange and I also tried to charge with other charger and via usb c but nothing. I really don't know what happened :(

I'd like to ask you if you ever saw this method working: I saw a video of a mac that doesn't turn on linked via usb C cable (thunderbolt) to another working mac. Then they launch the recovery mode from the not-working mac controlling it from the working mac and then they use the not-working mac like a simple external drive. So from the working mac they can copy and paste the file from the working one to an external drive.

Have you ever seen this method? Do you think I could make an attempt?

@giu23 On the newer Macs, there isn’t an internal drive, like in the “old days”. These things have the “drive” NAND chips soldered straight onto the logic board.

It’s still a requirement that the machine is running and operating perfectly, in order to access the data stored. Machine not running; No data!

In theory, you can do board level work (desolder NAND, requires skill and tools), and using a programmer, but the contents still aren’t readable.

And what about desolder the NAND and put them in another operating board? How many possibilities there are that the smell of burn is from the NAND? I’d like to know if those parts can physically be destroyed by high temperature. Even though I find this very hard because the fans were not operating and the Mac shell was not hot.

Did you ever see the method I was telling before? Because I was wondering that maybe if the NAND are still good maybe that method could work.
