Replaced logic board, worked fine, 24 hours later wont boot

I replaced the logic board on my 13" macbook air 2017 and was extremely excited it worked. Used it some, set it down, didnt touch it for 24 hours, came out to use it this morning, and it wont boot. Charging fine, light goes green then orange for charging and stays lit. I took the case back off and checked every connection, focused specifically on the i/o board and the power connectors to the screen. Nothing is out of place. It worked like a brand new computer on first boot up yesterday, I used it for an hour or so. Now it doesnt even try to boot. Would love some help.

To be clear the MagSafe charger LED does get to Green afterwards (after Amber)?

por

Green to amber. Once at full charge, it goes to green. Since this post, I removed the battery cable to see if i could jump the power pads to the starter. When I removed the battery and plugged the charger back in, the computer booted up. I'm writing this response from the computer in question lol. My best guess at the moment is I have an IO board issue

Ok I finally got everything completely fixed. Just in case someone finds this thread and has similar issues, Im going to break down everything from the beginning:

Issue: spilled sticky icky beverage all over open/running macbook air 2017+ leading to complete shutdown

Solution:

  • Logic board replaced, inner case cleaned with ISO alcohol
  • Resulted in working computer, but fan running on high constantly and would only turn back on after a manual shut off by removing the battery cable and then plugging in the magsafe charger, this would auto start the computer

Issue 2 (post-logic board replacement) - no restart with power button, battery removal required to restart, fan running on high

  • Replaced the fan and battery with no change - they may have needed replacing anyway, but both were working fine and no change to computer operation. Through all searching, I could only find reference to a single temp sensor in the logic board and should have had no reason for the fan to run constantly eating up CPU %, but here we were.

Solution:

  • replaced the trackpad power cable, cleaned the trackpad board again, removed the spacebar and flanking command buttons, cleaned all with alcohol.
  • Reinstalled new trackpad cable and cleaned key mechanisms. It no longer runs the fans on high and will shut down and restart correctly with the power button!

Short Summary:

If you have a liquid accident and replace your logic board but still have fan/power issues - don't replace everything! It's the trackpad cable! You may even be able to get away with cleaning the cable connectors and reinstalling, but it's like a 12$ part so worth just replacing. I haven't found this info ANYWHERE else but have seen many people complaining about the same issue. Somehow, the trackpad cable is related to the temp sensor on the logic board and will cause fan operation constantly as well as prevent a restart from the power button. New cable, new logic board, no more problems. This has been a 9 month off and on diag and project for me, so hopefully this saves someone in the future!!

@Craig Daugherty - I’m more inclined to believe you have a failing battery or SMC needed a hard reset for some reason. Install this gem of an app to get a view of your battery CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window with the battery tab opened up and paste it here for us to see.

that's a good bet. I'll try that and see what it says, thank you!

Im also seeing it might be temp sensor in the trackpad - i definitely know it was affected by the liquid spillage.

Ok so I have since replaced the battery (and the fan itself) and done an SMC reset. If I turn off the computer, it will not reboot with the power button until I remove the (brand new) battery cable. With the battery removed and the charging cable in place, I can then hit the power button a few times and it will boot.

Really I have two issues:

1 - if I turn off the computer, the only way to boot it back up is to remove the battery. It is the same with the original battery and the brand new one.

2 - the fan (also brand new) runs on high constantly eating up my cpu. I have SMC reset it (and removed the battery to turn it back on) and it still runs continuously. I have not been able to find any evidence of another temperature sensor than the one on the logic board (also brand new) so I'm extremely stumped.

The only other thing it could be is the keyboard itself, except every key works fine and the power button works to turn it off as well as back on (once the battery is removed.) seriously flabbergasted.

@craigdaugherty - well it looks like this logic board has an issue!

With everything back together, leave the battery disconnected, press and hold the power button to fully discharge the board. Now plug in the battery and as soon as the system restarts press the D key to enter the onboard diagnostics. Let us know the errors.

@danj replaced trackpad cable and all issues resolved! I broke it down in the answer above. Thank you for sticking with this for me man, i took a wild stab and it worked out. If you have any theories as to why the new trackpad cable fixed the problem, i'd love to know how it's related to fan op and power button lol
