Galaxy S5 Dropped in soup

I dropped my Galaxy S5 in soup, back cover was on, shut off, when I plugged in it made a sizzling sound. Phone still turned on. I stored it to dry for 3 days, but when I picked it up, I noticed a brown spot on the screen and when I put a battery in it and plugged it in, it didn’t sizzle anymore, but the screen was completely black, phone still working, but unusable due to black screen.

sorry about it costing 200 dollars, or it not being white, i couldn't find a white one in stock or cheaper that was in stock.

@80stechkid it might be more cost effective to buy a new one completely

I’m probably going to get another S5 just for it’s screen.

I would just get a new one but need my data back

get one in the good condition ( if you purchase one using my link) as it is cheaper you will just use the screen anyway

80stechkid besides replacing the screen, you want to deal with the soup immersion. If you do not take care of it now, you really don't have to worry about a new screen. Corrosion is most likely going to get your phone.

For now you want to stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse. This may further damage your phone.

The next thing to do, is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using [these guides] . When you remove your main board, you must remove all EMI shields from it. If you do not remove those, you might as well not do anything. After you remove those, clean the whole board, connectors and all with +90% isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide , and even so it was written for an apple iPhone 3G, all the points are still pertinent to your phone as well. While you clean your board, check for any obvious damage, like burned or missing components etc. When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Best thing to do would be to clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner, but if you do not have access to one, this will at least help. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate. Until it is cleaned, everything will only be a guess. It is possible that you only have a bad display and replacing the display assembly may fix it. However, you still need to take care of the Soup.

@oldturkey03 It doesn’t sizzle, make any smell or smoke anymore, just the screen doesn’t show anything. I’ve seen the orange spot before on a Toshiba laptop and another S5 with a shattered screen. I’ll look to see what it is, it could be corrosion from the liquid getting to the screen.

@80stechkid I have no doubt that it is your screen that has been damaged. The AMOLED screens are absolutely outstanding screens, but when they break. dang it gets expensive. I know you can get replacement LED screens that are around USD$40 but they are not as nice as the original. Anyhow, my concerns are the residual damaged fro the soup. All your spices etc. will leave conductive elements, like sodium and potassium, behind. This can lead to short circuits as well as corrosion. Not right away, may take a couple of weeks but eventually, your phone might just fail because of it. I prefer to be a little proactive by avoiding later issues.
