How to identify the mac pro is still in working condition?

Got two mac pro workstations from local sale, one is year 2006, and the other is year 2008, both has ram and hard drive installed, the 2006 one has GPU card equipped, and the one from year 2008 doesn't have GPU. By connecting the 2006 with monitor, it powers on, no special warning sounds, but no image showing on display, remove the GPU card from 2006 and put it on 2008, turn it on, samething, powers on, no warning sounds, but no image on display either. So, is there an easy way to identify if these workstations are still in working condition, but just need to buy a compatible GPU card? Try to figure out if it is worth investing any money on it. Any thoughts?

Here is the update, I did nvram reset, and can have Apple chime sounds on both machine now, the 2006 can boot successfully with images show up on screen. I guess my next step is to find the compatible GPU card for 2008 and continue this test.

@hellomacos - From the description it sounds like both don't have any image on the screen.

@lovecd - The MacPro's normally would have the startup tone unless someone disabled it. So it does look like something deeper is a miss, besides the question of the GPU board.

I would review the onboard diagnostic LED's to see what they are telling us. I haven't spent too much time on these older models so I would like @mayer chime in as he's got more skills on these.

You should be able to locate the Apple service guides for these as they have leaked out.

From the Guides:

The Mac Pro (Early 2008) logic board includes one double-wide PCI Express graphics slot and three PCI Express expansion slots, for a total of four slots. The computer comes with a graphics card installed in slot 1. You can install additional PCI Express graphics and expansion cards in the remaining three PCI Express expansion slots.

Important: Graphics cards from previous Power Mac G5 models are not compatible with Mac Pro (Early 2008) models. In addition, Mac Pro (Early 2008) graphics cards are not compatible with previous models.

What GPU cards are you using?

That is the correct card for the 2006 model, however it will not work in a 2nd Gen MAC PRO. https://www.revamp-it.ch/index.php/en/sh...

The card to get for your 2008 machine is the Apple GeForce GT 120

@mayer - Thanks, but I would like to find out is there an easy way to diagnose if it is in working condition before investing money on getting the right GPU card. Any thoughts?

Tom, The only way I know of to test it. is to put in a known working GPU.
