How to repair vertical lines on screen?

Block Image

I bought an old Mac online. The ad stated that is was functional with no HD, but when installed an SSD, I noticed tiny vertical lines.

I’ve read about baking a specific chip inside the computer to help resolve this. That seems kinda extreme and I don’t think I’m up to diving that deeply into the mechanics of this old computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You posted a screen shot from within the system which only captures the digital image not the physical image so it looks just fine here!

You need to use a camera to physically take a picture of the screen emulating what you see with your eyes. Also make sure its at the largest resolution and you don't compress the image either.

@danj The image James posted is a photograph of the screen, not a screenshot. I can see the thin vertical lines James describes, especially when you enlarge the image to full size.

They're most evident at the bottom of the screen near the shut down and sleep icons.

@dadibrokeit - You either have better eye's or the image I'm looking at is not what you are seeing.

So from your description small lines would be a noise issue which would need looking at the logic boards noise suppression capacitors.

Without seeing a good image of your problem its hard to tell you what the source of the problem is:

  • Thick Black lines is a sign of a damaged LCD panel not the GPU.
  • Thin moving lines is often video signal noise which can be a damaged LVDS cable or the connectors on the logic boards the cable spans.
  • Chroma shift is often a bad T-CON board in these older systems.
  • Loss of video image can be a damaged display or GPU logic.
