Wifi sometimes refusing to work. Bluetooth sometimes refusing to work.

Hello iFixit community,

Having helped some of you guys fix your devices, I now have my own issue.

In case you don't know, I've been creating the "Battery" guide under Lenovo Yoga S730-13IML/Ideapad 730S-13IML. I received one of these near the start of the year as a project computer. I had a previous question regarding the battery and it turned out the whole battery was faulty so i got a replacement. It now works!

But whilst updating drivers to keep them up to date, I managed to screw up my wifi and bluetooth and ever since a long time ago it hasn't been stable.

Here's the (multiple and complicated list of) things that happened as a result of this:

  • I can't connect to WLAN (Wireless LAN) at random points in time as it keeps turning off and on. Nuking the entire OS and doing a fresh install has done nothing to aid this. It was stable until it just randomly thinks it's having a thermal issue (It's well within the 0-80˚ range intel rates it for) and then promptly shuts off.
  • I can't connect anything to the bluetooth part of this thing. it will sometime work and be stable, other times be really dodgy, and now just flat out not work. This is a huge pain as i had plans to switch from my 2019 macbook air (With a dual core i5) to that once i replaced the battery but now i really can't.
  • Event viewer has filled with wayyyyyyyyyy too many events. Within the span of two days since nuking the entire thing it has accumulated close to 7000 events (6500 of which are just related to this issue). Most of which are telling me the hardware has failed or returns an invalid value to the driver.

This could be a lot to read but here's most (if not all) of the event logs relating to this issue:

7011: radio ON

7021: Connection telemetry fields and analysis usage

6062: Lso was triggered (occasional)

7012: radio OFF

7015: CT kill event

This cycle continues on repeat and never ends. The occasional error is:

5010: Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz: The network adapter has returned an invalid value to the driver.

5005: Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz: Has encountered an internal error and has failed

10317: Miniport Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz, (9e4dda63-2099-4724-8c5e-3825d65a8d24), had event Fatal error: The miniport has detected an internal error

5002: Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz: Has determines that the network adapter is not functioning properly.

5011: Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz: A required parameter is missing from the registry.

0010: ACPI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal PCI Operation Region (0x10), Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

5001: Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz: Could not allocate the resources necessary for operation.

0017: The local Bluetooth adapter has failed in an undetermined manner and will not be used. The driver has been unloaded.

If you couldn't tell already, the wifi card in my system is: Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560NGW.

I've sat down and spent quite some time writing this so hopefully you guys can help me. I've done multiple things that have temporarily worked (And tried them again and again):

  • Disabling and enabling the WLAN function of the computer
  • Reseating the entire wifi and bluetooth card
  • Downloading official drivers multiple times (Both from Intel and lenovo themselves)
  • All of these things mixed with each other and over countless hours diagnosing this problem
  • At this point I am thinking of just buying a new wifi card for 20 AUD as I have no other real choice. This all happened after installing the latest intel drivers off their website and then subsequently re-installing lenovo's proprietary ones which have not worked so far.
  • Sorry for the reallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy long post i was just trying to squeeze in as much info as i could for you guys to help. I will add to this if i need to to help elaborate and/or provide further info.
  • Cheers,
  • Nick P

Update: 17/4/22:

The CT kill combo (7011, 7021, 7012, 7015) Happens over a span of about 4 seconds and with the machine open and while it's running, it is not getting hot. CT kill is supposed to be thermals which is really odd. Let me know if any of you guys have any ideas.

Update 10/5/22:

It is very weird: It's like if someone is really nice at one point then completely off the hook. And then it "Kinda" comes back then goes again. I have never seen this behaviour and is likely drivers however I haven't found a software fix for it yet and am looking at the purchase of a new card.

Thank you for the quick reply Andrew S and Jayeff

Have you used Intel DSA (Driver & Support Assistant) to uodate the drivers or did you download the updates manually?

Hi Andrew,

I used DSA originally to update the drivers then this started happening. Ever since then it has never been stable

@np_f1_2021

What happens if you remove the WLAN card from the motherboard, is the OS stable i.e no "overheating"?

For purposes of elimination, perform a custom diagnostic scan on the fan and sensors.

Hello,

I have done custom diagnostics on the WLAN and it passes when ti works but when the wifi is off it passes with 3 warnings
