Internal Keyboard Startup Keys Not Working

Years back, I tired installing bootcamp on my Macbook Pro but the bootable usb did not work. That was when I realized that the startup keys on my internal keyboard are not working. I had to change my startup disk to get back on my MacOS and the only resolution was using an external keyboard to use startup keys. And until now, the startup keys (option/alt, cmd+R, etc.) do not work on my internal keyboard. To think that it’s the keyboard issue does not make sense as all keys work just fine when booted to my MacOS. I tried NVRAM reset through terminal but still the same. The only startup key that works is shift key (safe mode), and nothing else. Any suggestions?

Do you have access to a second Mac which you can connect to yours using Target Disk Mode? Understanding the Applications for Target Disk Mode As I’m suspecting you have a boot sector infection Malware!

Using the second Mac as your boot system run a good antivirus/malware application to make sure you have nothing present. Even if you don’t catch it the damage maybe done so you need to fully wipe the drive and rebuild it or maybe its time to replace the HDD with a SSD to gain some performance.

The risk is when running Windows as it can allow the malware access to your boot sectors.

Thank you so much for answering!

Unfortunately I currently do not have an extra Mac, but to add, I changed my HDD to SDD shortly after the bootcamp incident (simply because the HDD died) and did clean install of MacOS twice after that.

Could this have removed the malware by any chance (though the startup keys issue still persists)?

If your suspicion on boot sector infection is correct and the clean install should have fixed it, could it be something like firmware malware mentioned in this article that I found (link below)?

In case you might wonder how I clean installed on my MBP without second mac or startup keys, I used bootable usb, detached the internal drive, then mac automatically booted to usb, then attached the internal drive and so on..

@jason_km 'Thunderstrike 2 firmware malware' was a demo of the risk natively within macOS. Here we have the weakness of running Windows which opened a different doorway ;-{

Time to get a good malware checker and removal tool.

So I've tried out most of the available anti-malware programs out there and still no luck. Having that I've wiped my drive a couple of times already, is there anything else that you could suggest me before I shove this laptop under my bed? (now I'm scared it might really have some contagious high level malware)

@jason_km - There are a few things that someone with the deeper skills and tools could try. Do you have a larger Mac repair shop near you?

por

@danj There is one in a city beside ours. I might be able to visit them around next month if I'll have to.
