Magsafe 2 charging from 12V

I’d like to charge my Macbook Pro 2013 in the car, from 12V.

My idea was to use a Satechi 72W USB-C charger and something like this adapter.

Satechi says this:

The charger uses PD 2.0 and negotiates the maximum charge rate your device is capable of, supporting PD profiles at 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, and 20V. Each profile is capable of delivering current at a maximum of 3A.

Would this work?

The original MagSafe based systems like yours use a one-wire comm link between the system and the MageSafe charger via the middle pin. This is a custom Apple design it is not compatible with the USB PD standard as its older!

As part of the USB-C standards effort they had the goal to define a method so power bricks could offer support to lower wattage devices as well as lower the power when the battery temp inside the device is getting to hot, as you can see here: USB-C Power Delivery

Sadly your solution is not workable. It assumes the MagSafe to USB adapter offers the needed tech to meter off the power coming in and working with the system alter the power flow from the charger, so the system is not over charged.

Thanks for your answer, I will not go down this road. BTW, what you are saying is that in the original Apple system, the charger changes the output voltage or current based on what the laptop communicates with it?

@Zsolt Ero - Yes! All Lithium Ion batteries have a thermal control system to regulate the power being used to charge the battery.
