still does not power on after logic board replacement

Two years ago my MBP A1150 died. How? Basically the MagSafe will stay green, but the machine will not power on. The DVD drive will make some noise, but it will do nothing else.

i took it to Apple service and they diagnosed burned logic board please shell out 1000$ kthxbye. So the machine went in a drawer for the next two years.

Recently i bought a brand new logic board replacement on eBay at 250$ with the hope of bringing new life to the MBP. I followed the iFixIt guide for logic board replacement to the letter, and i'm pretty sure i made everything correctly.

However, when i connected to power adapter, it will: show up green, and it will not power on. The DVD drive will make some noise, but it will do nothing else.

If this sounds exactly what was happening before, then you would be right. So i'm tempted to believe the apple service did a bad/lazy diagnostic and is something else. The question is how to diagnose the source of the problem?

Any charge in your battery and are you using a 85w AC adapter ?

Try taking the topcase off completely, and bridging the power-on pads on the board with tweezers. If it behaves exactly the same, then at least you've ruled out topcase issues. Or I guess an even simpler way to deal with this is: Does the optical drive make noise as a response to pressing the power button, or does it make noise automatically when you connect to the AC? If it responds to the power button, your topcase is likely good.

I would also test your RAM slots by attempting to power up with one populated and the other empty, and then with the other populated and the other empty.

It's a boring suggestion, but the common denominator with both boards is that you're got the same left I/O in there, so it may be worth swapping that out to see if anything changes. It's much cheaper than the board itself, so I always try swapping that before taking a massive gamble and buying a new board.

Also, remove the battery, and disconnect the optical and hard drive cables. Until your computer has a pulse extraneous components will only complicate the issue.

Hi rdklinc, yes the optical drive makes noise in response to pressing the power button, also i forgot to mention that when the AC is plugged the little white light below the touchpad is on.

I've alredy ordered a new Left I/O Board. Will try that as soon as it arrives and update the post

thanks!

Interesting...definitely try the RAM slot test, as a lot of machines that have RAM in a bad slot will behave in the way yours is. I've salvaged many "bad" machines by simply removing a memory module from a bad slot. But then again, I'm a moron for suggesting that -- it would be extremely unlikely that both your boards had the bad slot. But still, I'd try it anyway.

Unless the machine has been dropped or water spilled in it, Apple should have fixed it for the flat rate of $280. Did you take it to an Apple Store or an Authorized Service Provider (ASP)?

it seems in Panama, Authorized service providers haven't heard about that, because they offered to fix it for 1000$ (two years back, i'm not sure the rate at the moment)

If the "genius" likes you, they will offer you a Depot repair for $280. If they don't like you or are just not feeling helpful that day, they will offer you the full-priced non-Depot Apple repair for $1000. It helps to go in asking for a Depot repair, because then it would be awkward for them to refuse.

The ASPs are authorized by Apple but don't work for them. They get paid for doing warranty work from Apple. When it comes to out of warranty repairs, they are in essence in competition with Apple. If they tell you about the flat rate deal (which they make nothing on) they cut their own throat. So they buy the part from Apple, install it and charge you what ever they want. You need to contact Apple directly to get the "flat rate" fee. There is no number for Panama so I would call the US directly. When you get to the automated system you do not want to answer their questions as it will tell you that you are out of warranty and any advice will cost $45. So just mumble something so that the system kicks you out and gets you to a human being. Here are the contact numbers worldwide. I would use the US number if you speak English and the Mexico number if Spanish: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

thanks Mayer, i should have probably ask this before going ahead to buying the logic board and trying the repair myself. Maybe i felt enboldened by the super crisp replacement guide in iFixIt, and that i really wanted to take care of this myself. In any case, i've already invested in the logic board, so i want to explore other options before even considering spending another 280$ (plus shipping). I realise that going one extra little step ahead and trying to replace the left I/O board might be just digging myself deeper, specially if the issue is some tiny cable messed up. I guess its kinda of a gamble at this point

Sure, I understand and agree with you at this point. I do worry about a brand new part from eBay (or any part for that matter from eBay). If all else fails, send the part back and do the Apple deal. Good luck.

Sorry if this may seem obvious, but I thought I would toss it out there.

Have you tried resetting the SMC?

An SMC reset is always worthwhile but it will not generally bring a board back from the dead. Especially considering he had the same issue with the last board.
