iFixit Portable Anti-static Mat (iFixit's own product)

In reference to iFixit’s own Portable Anti-static Mat which can be purchased directly through iFixit store…..

Is this mat heat resistant as I will need to be soldering and reflowing components.

……..Alternatively.. the special phone repair mats (NOT iFixit branded(see picture attached)) that are supplied with the sections for placing components (these are identified as ESD but not supplied with a grounding socket…. Are these ESD safe or falsely advertised.

Many thanks

Paul

The iFixit anti-static (ESD) mat can be used to support a logic board which is being soldered. Reflowing requires heating the logic board to a set temp as well as desoldering/resoldering the given component/s.

Applying direct heat to the mat will damage it and you do need to keep the mat clean of solder and flux as the small odd solder beads could create a short on your work piece, and the flux can damage the conductivity of the mat to shed the static charge.

Anything that is conductive can be thought as being ESD safe. But! That object or whats in it could have a static charge which needs to be dissipated!

So its important the tray be placed on the ESD mat for the static charge to dissipate into the mat and then onwards to the earth grounding connection.

So let’s look at an example: You have two desks in two different rooms and have a nice wool rug that when you walk across it you get a nice static charge between them.

So in Room-A you have a bunch of old systems and you need to take some of the MOSFET logic which is very static sensitive to the other room as your work surface in Room-A is setup with a ESD mat you have no risks and you place the parts into the tray to carry to the other room.

With the tray in hand you walk across the rug gaining a charge as you are holding the tray the tray and its contents acquire the static charge, you don’t touch the parts only the tray, you carefully place the tray in Room-B benches ESD mat leaving it sit there for a good 5 minutes as you get a cup of coffee.

You come back to the bench and before touching anything you put the ESD wrist strap on giving it a minute to equalize your static charge. You then touch your tools and other gear which is not grounded and then lastly you start working pulling the parts out of your tray…

So did you damage or prevent damage to the parts? Did you find the possible failure/s here in the story?

Hi Dan,

I think the failures are:

1) Room B is not connected to an earth grounding connection.

2) Leaving parts for 5 minutes without anywhere for it to dissipate to ground.

3) The wrist strap is not connected to ground, so again the static charge has nowhere else to go..

I hope this is correct, and that I think you are trying to say that any mat that does not have a ground connection (connected to earth ground) is not going to dissipate static charge, therefore the parts will be damaged.

Await your feedback.

@polsky - You got it! You don't want to assume! As it makes an Ass/U/Me!

The one you had forgotten was Room-A as I hadn't stated the mat was grounded either! And what about missing wrist strap?

You got the point! You need to make sure the pathway is present to ground in this example. But, let's go off world! What is ground on the ISS space station?

While I had focused on earth ground in my story. The truth is as long as everything is at the same static charge there is no risk! But! As soon as you ground or encounter a higher charge things can be damaged!

So in the case of the ISS the metal frame of the station is the ground reference.

Thanks Dan for that information

Yes I can see where you never mentioned about Room A mat being grounded, nor the wriststrap.

It was rather late when I read this.

The ISS explanation was a very good example as well.

To put the whole thing in a nutshell-

I think what you are trying to say is that the mat I posted on here (without any ground connection) is not the safest of mats to use…

And

The iFixit mat is okay although it doesn’t have a grounding point that can be connected to earth grounding, therefore no dissipation can occur.

Hope that is correct

The iFixit Portable Anti-Static Mat Has all of the needed pieces you need except what you can connect to for your physical ground. One option is getting this Banana Jack Ground Plug Adaptor so you can connect to your electrical outlets ground. But is the outlet properly wired? To test that you'll need something like this Receptacle Tester

As you can see I've listed North American outlet info. You should be able to locate the European or Asian outlet versions.

Your last option is finding a metal water pipe that exits the building to mount a grounding wire (bare metal contact) many houses these days are piped in plastic pipes which is not conductive so that might force you to get a grounding rod to establish a ground. But before you go to such extremes see if your building already has a grounding rod.

So having a mat in its self doesn't offer the full solution, you need to establish the ground you will require to be fully safe.

Thanks again Dan.

I already have one of those ESD plugs. That is what I have been using up to now.

I also have a Receptacle Tester and can confirm that the outlets ground is wired properly.

I have placed an order for the mat and it should arrive tomorrow (hopefully).

You have been extremely helpful and set my mind at ease
