What preperations need to be done with an SSD before swapping?

The HDD on my iMac died a few months ago and I was going to replace it with the SSD replacement kit from iFixIt. I was wondering if there’s anything I need to do before starting the installation with the SSD. Do I need to format it or load anything onto it (like the OS) before I actually install it into the iMac?

Usually I would install the SSD into the computer and install MacOS afterwards. I can guide you through the process.

@andrewsawesome Any guidence would be welcome. So I take it I need to buy the Mac OS, but how do I install it if the iMac doesn't have a CD drive? Do they do a USB installation or something?

por

@cruxx MacOS is free to install on Mac computers. I usually avoid USB installation. Do you want to install the latest MacOS compatible with your computer (Catalina) or the OS that came with the computer (Mountain Lion)?

por

@andrewsawesome I plan to install the latest version compatible with the computer

@cruxx Here are the steps you will need to perform:

  1. Install the new SSD using this guide
  2. Press the power button, then immediately start holding Command+Option+R.
  3. Keep holding Command+Option+R until you see a globe with the text “Starting Internet Recovery”. Wait until the globe is off the screen.
  4. You should now be prompted to connect to a network. If you use an Ethernet cable, connect it now. If you use Wi-Fi, choose your network then click the check mark. Enter your network password then click the check mark again.
  5. You should see a globe with a status bar. Wait for the status bar to be full.
  6. You should now see a window that says “MacOS Utilities”. Double-Click Disk Utility.
  7. Find your drive. If you do not see your drive, click View>Show All Devices.
  8. After selecting your drive, click “Erase” or “Format”. When prompted, use APFS and the GUID partition table.
  9. After your partition is created, exit Disk Utility. Double-Click on “Reinstall MacOS” and go through the on-screen prompts to install MacOS onto the new SSD.

Thank you, this is the guide I was planning on using, and I'll be picking up the iMac kit from iFixIt which comes with the pizza cutter I believe. I think I'll take your advice though and order an extra adhesive kit.

@cruxx - You'll want a heat gun to warm the case and the edge of the glass so you get good adhesion and a small J-roller to help press the display down.

Most people don't take the effort to properly secure the display afterwards, don't fail to make sure the display is properly remounted afterwards.

@danj Would a small blow dryer work in place of a heat gun?

por

@cruxx - It may not be powerful enough. But if thats what you have I guess you'll need to give it a try.
