Does the console still work with a desoldered wifi ic

As I want to give my switch lite to my little brother I was wondering if the wifi ic on the mainboard can be desoldered without causing any functionality issues ( other than the lack of wifi of course) as he is is not allowed to have any “wifi compatible” devices?

Btw please no suggestions for the Nintendo parental control app or something like this, been there done that:)

I haven’t come across any device where an uninstalled Wi-Fi chip would stop it functioning. However if too much heat is applied while removing it you could end up with a brain dead Nintendo.

Make sure you clean the pads after removal in case of some bridging and make sure you don’t nudge any of the other components around the chip.

thanks, I was just curious since the wifi ic of the original switch seemed to cause the system to freeze at the boot logo, just like the switch checks the availability of each component on the board before it can boot.

@jake95 I have also seen this. I have just replaced the Wi-Fi chip if I couldn’t find anything else that stood out. I just put it down to a faulty chip which would cause it not to boot. I haven’t tried to boot one without it but like I said all the other devices I have worked on will boot without one.

You can purchase pre balled Wi-Fi IC’s for around $10 so if it doesn’t boot you can just put the pre-balled one on.

Hey @imicrosoldering!

I just ran across this thread while trying to solve an issue with a switch that will not power on after a wifi IC replacement.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by a "brain dead" Nintendo and how excessive heat could cause this?
