Black screen after the Switch logo, what are the possible causes?

I bought a broken Switch with the problem aforementioned in the title and am currently trying to repair it, however, I am struggling to determine the cause of the problem, which is why I thought I'd ask.

Other than the title, I have made several observations prior to opening the Switch, which are:

  • factory rebooting or updating through the bootup menu do not solve the problem;
  • neither does keeping it connected to a power source for several hours;
  • when powered on, it gets very hot I one's hands, almost like my old smartphone (IDK if it's normal, I've never owned a Switch before);
  • sometimes if connected and force powered off and then powered on once again, it will instead be stuck on the Switch logo forever;
  • letting it lose all charge did not solve the problem, but also created another one where the battery does not seem to charge anymore.

Due to the battery behaving the way it does after losing charge, I suspect it is the culprit, but I also wouldn't rule out some motherboard-related issue. From what I've gathered across the Internet, a faulty Wi-Fi part may also be the culprit. I am not sure what to buy as a replacement or how to diagnose in this case, so I thought it would be best to ask what is the most likely problem here. Also, for the future, what kind of tools are best for diagnosing electronics like this? I've been looking at this store's diagnosis module, but I am not sure if this is what I need for the small-scale stuff.

Hey there.

Having worked on several broken switch lites, I can say this is probably a battery issue. My first peice of advice is to stop charging it immediately and to disconnect the battery from the motherboard.

Then, if you can, buy a new battery or another switch lite (normal switch batteries are not compatible) and test it. If it works, great (just take care when removing the battery - a LOT of force is required).

If that doesn’t work, I recommend keeping your newly purchased battery but do not adhere it yet. I would (if you want to take the risk) opt to very gently heat the main SOC. Remove the motherboard before doing this as you may warp the screen or shell. This has fixed many blue screen issues in my past.

Just received the battery and installed it, replacing didn't work. How exactly do you suggest heating the main SOC?

Very janky so do this at your own risk.

Remove the motherboard from the shell. Next remove the metal shroud covering CPU to expose it (this can be done nondestructively). Remove and clean any thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol. Using a hot air station (or even a paint gun set to low) gently heat the chip. Make sure to cover the top of the board with folded tinfoil that can act to dissipate and absorb heat.

Like I said, do this at your own risk as it is obvious that it can go wrong. I have done this twice and have had success both times. The only point of failure I had was not removing the board and hence warping the shell and screen as the first repair I ever did. Good luck…

Not sure if I can get access to a hot air station, I only have a 350-500C heat gun and a hair dryer at home. What exact temperatures are we talking about?
