Silica bead jammed in headphone socket

My first question posted to iFixit.

I have what I believe is a small silica bead (from when a small packet of these things burst in my backpack) jammed in the headphone socket of the MacBook, which prevents the headphone jack from being inserted. Being small, hard and round, it has evaded all attempts to grasp it to pull it out. I think I need to go inside the case to fix it.

Is there an existing guide that addresses MacBook headphone jack issues generally, or close enough (I have looked, I can’t see one), or any suggestions on how I approach remedying this situation? Sure, I can use Bluetooth for headphones/earphones, but they tend to be too laggy, especially on apps like Garageband or MainStage. I want to be able to plug ‘em in.

Thank you in advance for any help that may be forthcoming.

Simon.

Ouch! You’ll need to replace the jack socket MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Function Keys, Late 2016-2017) Headphone Jack.

We don’t have a guide for the task but it shouldn’t be overly hard, follow this guide to disconnect the battery following the first steps to Step 15 MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2017 Screen Replacement. You’ll need to remove the logic board to get to the jack.

Then locate your jack for reference here’s the 2016 model

Thank you Dan, your guidance is invaluable.

As a novice fixer, this task makes me a little nervous. I have an old iPad air and iPhone 6s that I’m going to practice on (battery replacements for both) and then I’ll move up to considering the MacBook issue.

Cheers

Simon.

Just use a vacuum cleaner with the crevice cleaner attachment. The slica bead will be that only thing that is not soldered in place, etc. Just another idea but a steady hand and a small rotary tool like Dremel might be used very sparingly to loosen. But I would try the vacuum cleaner first.
