Blank display diagnosis (It does chime)

So my MacBook Pro display is blank/black. So trying to figure out if the display needs replacement or whether it is some loose connection:

  1. Chimes during startup
  2. Works perfectly with external screen (HDMI port to Flatscreen LCD)

Thank You

In a dim room do you see the screen glowing (the logo should glow)?

Using a flashlight aimed through the lid logo do you see the faint image of your desktop and its icons?

por

Nothing visible when I aim the flashlight through the lid. everything else seems to work fine with external display.

Couldn't this be due to some wire/pins being dislodged due to the stress of falling ?

Sadly, it does sound like your display got the worse of it. Let’s do a bit more testing, aim a flashlight though the lids Apple Logo do you see the faint image of your desktop and its icons? If you do then the backlight logic needs repairs, other wise the LCD panel is broken and you’ll need to replace the display assembly. This series is still highly sought! Here’s one source for the needed part 13” MacBook Pro Display Assembly Here you can see there are a few options for the part new to used from Grade-A to Grade-C each at different costs.

I did try the flashlight test - can’t see anything on the display. So I am guessing it is broken. Wondering if I should buy a display assembly or just purchase a used a1502 for a bit more.

@vivpr - No easy answer here, How worn is your system, does it have a few dents? Is it a now end model 2.7 GHz i5 or a better 2.9 GHz i5 or the top 3.1 GHz i7?

Maybe finding better i5 or i7 at a good price might be worth it. As long as the display is working you could move the display and the logic board over to your case as well.

So the tech who I am talking to has mentioned two things: 1. the display of course needs fixing, but in addition 2. He says that a power supply to the display needs fixing (IC replacement). He said there are two display circuits - so even with the external display being ok (HDMI port), the power to the display is not. So the cost is Display +$100 or so. Does that make sense ?

@vivpr - Yes it does.

The connector carries both the video signal and the backlight power. The test we did with the flashlight was a poor mans backlight. If you had seen the faint image then it would have been just the backlight that needed to be looked at. But you stated you couldn't see the faint image so the video side is bad as well pointing to the display needing replacement. I would start there and hope that was it.

One of the bad things in Kev’s vid was not disconnecting the power so your efforts to reset the cable could have blown the fuse or worse damaged the connector pins (shorting).

So the tech could be right you have a double whammy! One you might have created. A fuse is not a big deal but anything more could be costly.
