HP Laser Jet p1505n not compatible with MBP M1 2020 - any workarounds?

Hi - I have a perfectly good HP Laser Jet p1505n printer that will no longer print/function while using my MBP M1 2020. The printer is over 10 years old (my how time flies) but worked perfectly well with my old and presently dead-ish MBP 2010 (to be resurrected). It looks to be a 32-bit vs 64-bit incompatibility issue. Searching HP’s site as well as calling them yielded no help because > 10 yo (out of warranty) and their current updated drivers do not factor in Big Sur 11.0+ (I’m currently at 11.4).

My question to the field is do any of you know of a work-around or do I now have, yet, another paper weight (which is ironic since I cannot print anything to warrant having/using a paper weight)? I print fairly infrequently but still like having a workable printer on hand. Or is this a case of having a dinosaur (HP printer) vs Spot, the agile mobile robot (MBP 2020)? Thanks in advance.

I print from my samsung phone at times to my HP LASER JET P1505n. I have to admit I really do like this printer.

Try this: plug your printer in, go to System Preferences under the Apple, select Printers & Scanners. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected via USB cable. Your printer should show up in the printer column. Hit the + at the bottom of the prinyrtr box. Now you should get a message (if there is no driver available), that will ask if you want to download this driver. Do so and then see if you can set it up.

This failing, find the driver on your old system and move it to the new one..

Printer drivers are stored in a subfolder in the Library folder of your Mac's home directory. The Library folder is hidden from casual users in the latest Mac OS X operating system, so you'll need to press a keyboard command to see your printer driver files. Mac Finder: showing hidden files using keyboard shortcuts

  1. Open Macintosh HD or the folder where you want to display the hidden files in the Finder.
  2. Hold down the Command, Shift and Period keys: cmd + shift + [.]
  3. The hidden files and folders on your Mac will then appear partially transparent.

Mayer - thank you for your prompt and detailed response. As you can see in my latest post, I got the printer to print. Not sure how long this fix will last but it is also good to note your advice as well. Thanks again Mayer.

After some searching, I found that by “resetting the Mac printing system” solved, at least, the problem with my HP Laser Jet p1505n printer. I found this info. on Apple Support page entitled, “Resetting the Mac Printing System to Solve a Problem”. I took the following steps (from Apple’s webpage):

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners.
  2. Press and hold the Control key as you click in the list on the left, then choose “Reset printing system” from the menu that appears.
  3. After you reset the printing system, the list of printers in Printers & Scanners preferences is empty.
  4. Re-add any printers.

I then plugged in the printer, connected via USB cable and I was able to print. I didn’t need to actually re-add any (my) printer(s) as the OS system (I believe) recognised my current HP printer. This is really great as I asked and explained my printer situation to 4 individuals (separately) at a very well known big box electronics store and they all told me the same thing - time to dump the HP Laser Jet p1505n because it is obsolete and time to buy a *new* printer. Crazy. It works and I still have over 75% of my toner available - and toner cartridges, at least for this model, can be very expensive. I am glad that I persevered. Maybe this “fix” will buy me some time but for now, I am not junking this printer.
