This is a MacBook Pro it has a LED back light, no inverters to this. All the voltage used to supply the backlight runs through 3 of the wires in the LVDS cable. The LVDS/video cable runs through the hinge on the left side of the laptop and it's path is underneath the LCD/screen. You need to replace your LVDS/video cable. You can purchase 1 here. The proper guide for the replacement procedure can be found here.

i see, i thought it had one internally built into the display so wasn't possible to replace it, so the entire display needs to be replaced.....this is what the apple store told me having had a display replaced under warranty (differn't problem then the poster)... thanx for the info...........like i pointed out in my answer i wasn't clear on this myself until now.

If the actual backlight is out most people, Apple included, replace the LCD. These do have what Apple calls a LED driver board, that amounts to a 5 volt switch, the wires to it run with the iSight wires. The actual LED driver is on the Logic Board right in front of the LVDS connector/header. Inverters are only found on devices with a CCFL backlight.

Hey Jonathan, I know this was a long time ago... I just saw this... but when you say, "going blank" do you mean fading into white? Or fading into black?

My screen keeps fading into white... and so I'm curious if buying this part worked for you?

If so, I'll get one! Thanks for your help.

It sounds like your LED inverter or loose connection ( it has one just integrated into the screen unlike the older LCD backlit models)......... when it goes blank, which i assume means black can you see any text on the screen using a flashlight?

If so sounds like a backlight issue and the screen would need to be replaced........ usually based on my somewhat limited experience with this model these LED backlights just fail completely however like the older ones intermittent issues can happen.

Based on the question i imagine it works fine with an external monitor?

Checking for a loose or bad connection problem via the cables....... would be something i would check first esp since you mentioned keeping pressure on part of the frame to keep your screen on............

ribbon cable if you can't see anything at all on the screen......

...... can be a tricky diagnosis having the computer half apart testing and looking for the result.

They are some other similar questions here on ifixit that have been asked about this issue which should help having a significant amount of information.

I would provide more information, however i usually work on the older models, and PC's etc..........so been awhile, over a year maybe since i had to work on one of these models.

Hope this info helps, it's been couple of days since you asked your question and hopefully this info will point you in the right direction.
