MacBook Air isn't getting any power: how to check which part fails?

Hello guys,

As of today, my macbook is not charging anymore and is completely discharged now. It seems that the problem does not come from the power adaptater since I tried to use it with my smartphone and it charged it.

I have the iFixit toolkit and a multimeter and I would like to locate the problem by checking voltage when my Macbook is powered, but I don’t know which pad/pin I have to check. Is there an existing process to do that?

Thanks,

Sylvain

Generally, I recommend installing a good power monitoring app like CoconutBattery as it can help you monitor things.

Here you’ll need a different tool to see whats happening USB-C Power Meter

You’ll need to see if the power Adapter is getting power into the system using this in-line with it.

Beyond that there is a limit of ones skills. We all can’t be brain surgeons! This is what you’ll need here as you’ll need to be able to read the schematics and board views as well as have a good understanding how micro-electronics works. Even I know my limits! This would push my skills Diagnosing USB-C muxing issues that prevent Macbook from charging

Maybe you need to see the chips that control the charging: Texas Instruments CD3215C00 USB type-C power controller

Thank you for your reply!

Actually, the battery is fully discharged now and I cannot power on my Macbook Air since it does not receive any power when the power adapter is plugged in. So any software solution is unfortunately not usable.

First, I'm looking for quick solution to check if the logic board is receiving power. If possible, I don't want to buy another device and wait for its shipment.

Your link to the video could have been useful, but it does not concern a MacBook Air and the logic board is unfortunately different.

Do you have any other advice? Should I try to do a SMC reset, a power-on pads or something like that?

Thanks for your supply!

@sylvain6120 - I guess I wasn't clear having the software on the system Before things got bad would have helped.

At this point you need to use the USB-C tester that's as far as you can go for a 'simple' test'

No magic bullet here, keyboard commands or other wise ;-{

The power logic within your logic board has a problem if you can prove the power is being taken in. Did you review the link I posted? Thats what you need to see.

Sure you could cut up a USB-C cable and patch it to your DVM. Its not something I recommend as you need to really know what you are doing as you could make a bad mess into a much bigger mess!

Bottomline: Time to get the meter but that will only tell you if the issue is internal or external.

Maybe the best answer is getting your system to someone with the needed skills, tools and access to the parts.
