MacBook Pro 16” Liquid damage, still working perfectly, apart screen

Hi everyone,

My MacBook Pro got water damaged more than a month ago,

Everything is still working perfectly, apart the screen that got some bleed on the right side of the screen and a black strap with many colored lines( sometimes it flicker). I run diagnostic, result, no issue found.

I went to apple store to see what are my repair option. They also run diagnostic without finding any issue.

Just screen replacement cost 1000$, I accepted the quote, and asked if they could check if any other issue or corrosion across the logic board and the entire laptop.

after they opened it, and been told firstly they took it completely apart, I got a call saying they found some corrosion on the logic board itself, the I/O board, the Touch ID, Battery, and top case/screen.

they suggested to think about , and do not recommend to fix it, because  even if is working perfectly now, overtime (could be two days, two weeks, two years)the machine it may fail, or not power up at all, also , there is the risk while they replace the screen, after disconnect some connector or something, could happen that the machine will not power up,(after they took it apart? And they disconnected already so many connectors??so after they corrected saying they opened it)  obviously if this happen is my responsibility.  If I want the logic board replaced, it will cost me same as the price of a MacBook Pro brand new. Also they said, they tried to clean up the corrosion and debris, still risky, and the amount for the screen replacements is so much for the low reliability.

‘We agreed that tomorrow I will be called from the technician that worked on it, and will explain better and tell me what are my options.

I feel Apple is not 100% honest with me.

Meantime, I’ve been in contact with a repair shop that does liquid damage repair, with many good reviews,  they suggested me that if is working perfectly, to get the screen replaced. And if any problem on the motherboards they could fix it.

I’m a bit confused and I’m not sure what to do?

any suggestion? I feel to risk it, and get to screen replaced, and keep using an amazing laptop.

Thank you in advance!

They are both are correct!

The question I ask first is what was the liquid that was spilled. As that sets the what the future holds.

Tap & spring water has lots of minerals dissolved within it so as at the H2O evaporates it leaves a film of these solids which can cause corrosion! If you had spilled distilled water then when it evaporates it does so cleanly!

Coffee, tea & juices all have acids and sugars as well which can also cause corrosion either directly or indirectly as the sugar offers a great food source for bacteria & fungus which spit out corrosive stuff.

So now the question! Do you play Russian Roulette? If you have a six shutter with one bullet Vs a submachine gun with one bullet, your odds change or do they? As long as the first six chambers are empty in the submachine gun then the submachine gun has better odds of not blowing your head off.

So this is where the risk factor of what is left on your logic board and if it is properly cleaned off before further damage happens. Then you need to look at the skills and cost of properly cleaning things Vs taking the gamble of leaving things as they are.

Thanks for your answer. It was coffee.. is hard clean the logic board? I’ve seen few people say distilled water, then let it dry.. use brush for take off debris, or using ultrasonic cleaner. I’m just scared that after I try to clean or take off components, taking off flex cable and the putting water, the MacBook Pro won’t turn on anymore

@ianop - You take a bath once and awhile ;-} But, you could also drown in a tea cups worth of water! So what to do??

Coffee as well as sugar (if you used it) are both water soluble so distilled water would be the direction I would go. You still have the cream or milk oils which need isopropyl alcohol to clean off. Isopropyl alcohol also is a effective dryer

So you'll need to use reagent quality isopropyl alcohol 80% or better (not rubbing alcohol or over the counter stuff as they all have other stuff in them). Using an ultrasonic cleaner helps in getting the both water and alcohol into the small crannies around the chips. I would use it, but the bigger problem is finding a unit that can hold the part (they get expensive in the larger sizes).

The issue comes down to the skills of the person doing the work.

You need to work out the risks as well as the probability of doing nothing.

I’m thinking to do it myself and take the risk..what sort of alcohol you suggest?

Do you think submerging the motherboard on a mix of distilled water and alcohol, and use a small soft brush cleaning around and then let it dry overnight could work?

por

You'll need two baths the first is the distilled water and the second is the reagent 90% isopropyl alcohol. You will need to prep the board removing anything that could be damaged by either and you will need to clean off the thermal paste as well. Unless you've done a few I would let someone who has tackle the job.
