How to remove battery with no tabs for the adhesive?

I have an iPhone 5S, and the battery life is not the best at the moment, so I thought I would replace it. I go to all the bother of opening up the phone, and working through half the repair, only to find that the tab used to pull out the adhesive strips don’t seem to exist. In the guide, they run a spudger along between the headphone jack and the battery to unfold the tab, but mine simply does not have that. It’s also worth noting that I don’t think it has been opened before, and the battery is an apple one.

I have found that if this happens, the best way to take out the battery is to first, remove the logic board. After this, heat the back of the phone with an iOpener or Heat Gun to soften the adhesive. Then use a plastic card and/or opening pick(s) to scrape the adhesive out from under the battery. This is a bit dangerous, but if done carefully, can help get the battery out.

Someone might have opened this phone before to take the battery out but failed as the tabs broke. This might have made them give up and led them to keep the battery in the phone.
