Graphics card upgrade query

Hi guys. I have a 2009 27” iMac with the HD 4850 card which has died or is failing (horizontal lines across the screen). From researching here I see that card can be replaced with a more powerful HD 5750. I am wondering can I reuse the heat sink assembly from the 4850 and just purchase the 5750 chip on its own ? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Are you sure the issue is the GPU and not the display its self? I would connect an external display to your system via the miniDP connection. If the external display is good then your display is the real issue not the GPU board. I prefer this method to be sure.

Another way is to boot up under Save mode Shift (⇧). Unlike your normal boot this will use the Intel GPU engine within the CPU. Is the image clean?

Thanks for the tips. I will give the Safe mode a try as the person I’m fixing it for does not have an external monitor handy. I didn’t realise that safe mode would skip the AMD GPU so will be interested to see what happens with that. Best safe than sorry alright would be rule out the display rather than buying an expensive GPU.

Thanks - I was able to confirm the problem is the card and not the display as safe mode displays fine with the Intel graphics. Also if anyone has a similar query I’ve been told by a repair company the HD 5750 is a drop in replacement for the 4850 and uses the same heatsink fitting.

@fintan_moloney - Be careful here! The MXM boards Apple uses have custom firmware on them! If you use something like a Dell board you'll need to flash it with the proper firmware which is a bit of a chore if you've never done it. Best to get a Apple P/N board that has the correct firmware already.

Oh for sure I’lll be getting one taken from an iMac. Don’t think I’d chance the firmware upgrade :-)
