Can I remplace my dead motherboard with MacBook Pro 13" UnibodyMid2009

The motherboard of my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 is apparently dead.

My MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13Inch (Mid-2010) features a 45 nm "Penryn" 2.4 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P8600)

My wife owns a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 13" (SD/Firewire 800 - Mid-2009).

It features a 45 nm "Penryn" 2.53 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P8700).

On my Mid-2010 I upgraded the RAM, put an SSD.

So the idea is to remplace the dead motherboard by the one in the Mid-2009 and keep the benefits of my upgrade.

But I don’t know much about compatibilities; would it work ?

Hi @appleavatar ,

Read the model number on the motherboard. It should read 820-XXXX. You can replace it with a same one. Why not try to fix it yourself? I am pretty sure you would get support from everyone here.

so I can replace a 820-XXXX motherboard with another 820-XXXX, even if not the same but as long as it is marked with the same 820 number at the beginning Correct ? If so, sure I would try to do it myself.

No, you need the full model number to match, not just the 820. Almost all Macbook motherboards starts with 820. There are usually 4 or 5 digits follow that actually determine the make and model of your laptop.

What you will find if you try to match it with an older laptop's motherboard is that your display connector will not be aligned, it will have different charger ports, audio connections etc...

Yes it is. They are not compatible with each other.

I would focus on trying to get your current board working!

To be clear you’re not gaining performance, sadly loosing! While the CPU clocking is a bit higher, your GPU’s logic is much better in the 2010 model

2009 - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
2010 - NVIDIA GeForce 320M

Otherwise I would just get a replacement logic board Vs swapping things around 13” Unibody MacBook Pro Logic Board 2.4GHz, Apple P/N 661-5559 for a few dollars more 13” Unibody MacBook Pro Logic Board 2.66GHz, Apple P/N 661-5560

I am not sure I feel like invert 225 euros in such an old laptop. You confirm me I cannot put the 2009 logic board in the 2010?

Then I would just have to use the most valuable components I can have in my mid-2010 and put them in the Mid-2009. I guess I cannot reuse the NVIDIA GeForce 320M.

@appleavatar - Moving your drive and RAM over to the older 2009 system would be the next best option.

To be clear you can't transfer the GPU as its soldered to the logic board with everything else.
