Got Ps Vita wet, and won't properly work

Hi. So one day I had a sticky substance on my Ps Vita. I resolved to over-wetting (I guess?) a paper tissue and wiping around the screen. I might’ve done something with the screen/over wet the screen and now, the Ps Vita won’t on when wanted (via the power button) and would only work when you use the ps button. If I do get to the flick screen to get to the application/selection screen it will, (most times) introduce the power off and cancel screen, which (no matter what you decide within a few seconds given) it’ll off and you’ll have to turn on the Ps Vita again (with the same problems). If I also make it to the application/selection screen, whichever application/game you choose, it’ll trap you in it, making the only way out is to turn it off again, and also repeat the whole process to get to the same spot again. I tried resetting and doing all of the "Reset and delete everything on the memory card” process a handful of times, yet it didn’t do anything. I have also tried out things that youtube recommends, and other things. If you leave the Ps Vita alone, it’ll suddenly start to proceed to the DFU Mode selection screen (it does happen in the middle of the night as well), it’ll just stay there and then off, then doing the same cycle again.

I really love this Ps Vita and I want to fix it so I can still play on a legacy gaming console from Sony.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the game console’s operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your game console and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the device to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the device and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible, do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as there may be water and corrosion under there as well. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as also

Hopefully after you have done all this the device might possibly work correctly again.

If this process seems too daunting, take your console to a reputable, professional electronics repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

do you have any Ps Vita repair stores near you that I may be able to contact, I live in New Zealand. Here, Ps Vita's are not a thing that people fix these days. Im just trying to get a place as soon as possible, even if I have to mail it in. — Philp

Not being in NZ I don't know but you could try contacting this repair service.

I have no personal experience with using them but the owner has been writing repair articles (not just related to computers but all forms of electronic devices) for an electronics magazine (Silicon Chip available both in Aust and NZ) for a long while now so maybe worth a try.

Use the repair guides to remove the battery as a minimum even if you don't do anything else — jayeff
