You stated that your machine is two years old and a G4, however the last G4 iMac came out in 11/2003. Can You clarify which machine you have.

A lot of these have the very common "bulging capacitor" issue, and that can be fixed fairly easily by someone who knows what they are doing and is good with a soldering iron. You might want to look inside to see if there are any exploded/bulging capacitors, and if so, advertise on CraigsList or elsewhere for a local tech who knows how to replace them. Hopefully this is the issue, because it's going to be cheaper to pay a tech $100 to do a soldering job than to buy a new board, etc. Power supplies also commonly fail in these, so it's worth exploring the possibility that that is the issue.

Please disregard my post. What I stated is in reference to the iMac G5, and I see now via your update that you have a G4. However, it's still relevant info for iMac G5 owners.

The wrong picture is up if it's a G4. The G4's were built on a pod. If it's a G5: The capacitor kits sell for about $36. I've done two one worked and one didn't. Will locate the seller if you would like. Also look for corrosion on top of the capacitors. This is a well know issue.

This question is attached to the "iMac" device so the picture is supposed to be kinda generic. When the poster clarifies what device they actually have, we can attach it to a more specific device.

He mentions above in a short post that it's a G4. I don't think there's an iMac G4 picture...I checked a while ago and I don't think there is a repair guide for it either unfortunately. I meant to do a teardown the last time I had one of these to repair, but it's such a awkward and clumsy model to work with that I discovered it was near impossible to take pictures without having someone there to help. :-)

I emaiedl a picture of the G4 to Chris.

If your machine looks like the picture, could you look on the bottom of the stand and find the model number. If it doesn't try opening the CD drive door and see if there is information there. The board probably can't be repaired but it can be replaced. iFixit carries the boards for a lot of these machines and there are guides for replacing them. The G4 is harder than the G5 but with a good guide and an hour or two it's not that difficult. With the model number I can direct you to the board and how to put it in. Could you also tell us how you determined that the motherboard was fried?

No, motherboards can generally not be repaired, even replacing them is very difficult and costly. What version iMac do you have?
