troubleshooting water damage - part of the phone still works.

i have a water damaged iphone 6s. both of the water contact indicators are red.

i have put in a good battery and a known good LCD screen, no activity.

i have tested the screen that came with it on a good phone and the button, digitizer and display all work fine.

i am able to get the phone into both Restore and DFU mode and have updated the IOS to 14.1.

so here’s the problem. the mobo seems to work well enough - boot, update IOS, talk with itunes - but there’s no visual activity, even with a known good LCD unit.

the connectors for the LCD are part of the motherboard, so i’m thinking that while the motherboard is mostly good, there’s probably some visual circuitry that has been compromised. is there any way to troubleshoot that?

on a side note, i know the “rice trick” doesn’t really work (and personally, i’d rather eat the rice that use it for rehabbing phones), but i was thinking of putting my phone in a bag (and frame to create space) along with some desiccating packets in a vacuum sealer bag - suck the air out so that the desiccator can focus on actual moisture. or am i out in left field on this one?

@beekerc "i know the “rice trick” doesn’t really work (and personally, i’d rather eat the rice that use it for rehabbing phones), but i was thinking of putting my phone in a bag (and frame to create space) along with some desiccating packets in a vacuum sealer bag - suck the air out so that the desiccator can focus on actual moisture." skip that and clean your board properly. If you still suspect moisture etc. your board has not been properly cleaned. Have you checked for corrosion damage etc.? You need to let us know all the steps you have taken to get this fixed :-)

@oldturkey03

hi and thanks.

okay, so here's what i did.

i pulled the motherboard, give it a 3 minute bath in 99% IPA with manual agitation. used a very soft bristle toothbrush on all exposed surfaces. did this 3 times with fresh alcohol each time. then hung it behind my server rack for two days (very warm - my kids use this area for drying their wet soccer shoes).

i did not remove any of the black shielding tape - should i have?

i then put the mobo into my testing case - good 6s that had a icloud locked mobo removed - and powered it up. it boots (the phone connects to itunes/3utools/drfone, but nothing shows on the (known good) LCD.

i did make sure to give the LCD contact ports a good (gentle) scrub.

@beekerc yes you do want to remove that black shielding tape. After all of that you want to go ahead and post some good pictures of your complete board with your QUESTION. Maybe we can see something odd. I assume you have the schematic as well as a meter etc. BTW what country are you located in? Just the country please

@oldturkey03

i will pull the tape and do another IPA bath and scrub.

are those tapes worth saving and re-using? if not, where can i get pre-cut replacements?

i will take pix after all this is done.

i do not have schematics

i do have a multi-meter, just a basic one.

i'm in the USA.

may take me a couple of days to get all this done and posted.

thanks for your patience and your help.

@oldturkey03

i may be mistaken, but i thought i saw a video (or video link) that you had attached to this thread that dealt with cleaning/troubleshooting the screen connector area.

if this is the case, can you post the URL for that video?

if i'm mistaken in my recollection, then please disregard.

Water damage is one of those “if you need to ask, you can’t do it” kind of repair. Leave it to the professionals.

thanks for the vote of confidence, but i've already rehabbed a bunch of phones, including mobo swaps. this is my first one with water damage. since the phone still boots and the LCD is not bad, i'm trying to figure out just where the fault is and looking for someone who might have already been there.

por

Rehabbed a bunch of phones does not mean you are able to do board level water damage repair, that's entirely something else.

por

maybe so, but what are the diagnosing steps to properly conclude this is a board level water damage repair issue? i have no problem conceding when the repair requirements exceeds my skill level, but i don't hit the eject button until i've fully exhausted all the things i can do. what i'm looking for is to make sure that i have exhausted all the things i can do.

you telling me i should just throw in the towel isn't helpful.

give me a list of all the steps/procedures for cleaning, testing and troubleshooting, short of whipping out the micro soldering startion, would be.

Exactly as I said, if you need to ask, this is not possible.

Of course it is possible to learn the water damage repair, but it always means doing a few practice runs on cheaper and easier stuff. If you start with an iPhone, it is not going to end well, at least for the iPhone.
