My MacBook shuts off mid-chime. How do I figure out what’s wrong?

Where do I start with diagnosis?

My Mac won’t go ahead with the boot past that chime – then it stops in the middle of it and turns off without restarting.

Both PRAM and SMC resets won’t work. I tried starting it with some parts disconnected (DVD, SSD, battery indicator… you know the drill) and so far it only stays on whilst RAM is disconnected, but with the beep signalling there is no RAM installed, obviously.

Otherwise it shuts down mid-chime as mentioned. The screen never even lights up, and honestly the issues started when I purchased and tried to install a new display assembly. Tried to clean the logic board with 99% isopropanol while paying special attention to RAM slot and no luck with that as well. How do I even figure out what might be wrong?

EDIT

Also, I forgot to mention that the front sleep indicator light blinks 6 times I believe, then stops and then the laptop goes onto the interrupted chime I wrote about. Tried swapping RAM as well, still no luck. So to summarise it, what’s been tried so far:

  • PRAM/SMC reset
  • Reseating RAM as well as swapping it
  • Cleaning motherboard with a soft paintbrush and isopropyl alcohol
  • Powering up logic board with everything other than fan and charger disconnected (doesn’t turn off, fan keeps spinning).

Wow, thank you for such a speedy reply! Never expected someone to look into my issue so fast, but I digress. :)

I actually took out the logic board before I posted the question and haven’t re-inserted it yet. So here are the pics, let me know if I should take some more, tried my hardest to make my tablet focus on the correct parts. I believe it is the correct one, I purchased it on eBay and it was dismantled from the exact same MacBook Pro I have (mid 2010 MacBook Pro, A1278). I purchased it because the old display assembly had for a long time issues with displaying yellow instead of white and the display assembly from my colleague’s laptop, when connected to mine worked just fine, so I figured it was either LVDS cable or LCD and decided it wasn’t feasible to play around with heat gun, hence the purchase of display assembly.

Where did you get the display? Are you sure you got the correct one?

Lets inspect the internal displays LVDS connecter and cable, disconnect the battery and take picture like this one Adicionar imagens a uma pergunta já existente

There are two possibilities:

The part you bought was defective!

The logic board socket has tarnished solder joints which could be a sign of a cold solder joint.

What does your original display show at this point (once you put things back together) Are you back to square one or is it not working at all?
