I tried flipping the locking tab up on the ZIF connector, and it just came off completely. The ribbon cable seems to seat properly and with the adhesive, does not back itself out. I tried replacing the tab but it’s just too small and I can’t tell which orientation it’s supposed to go. Can I just reinstall the trackpad as is?

Sadly, no the tab applies compression across the ribbon and the contacts so the connection is firm.
You only other option is replacing the full trackpad with the cable connected MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2009-Mid 2012) Trackpad

Lifting the tab releases the tension

The ribbon cable did not come connected. Any tips to getting the top of the connector back on? I thought it was a hinge. Why did it come off completely?
If you damaged the connector you'll need to get a new trackpad.
