Remove MacBook Pro 16" backplate without scratching the internals?!

Hi there,

Does anyone know any tips/tricks to removing the new Macbook Pros backplates without scratching up the internals? I’ve followed the iFixit tutorial on how to open it up, but it keeps scratching up the internals when I remove the backplate and has caused pogo stick to sheer off.

I haven’t opened up the new 16” models yet, but I can tell you I don’t have any problems opening the 13” & 15” models which use the exact same design.

You appeared to have pried a lot more than I do! Did you follow this guide? As well as use the same tools?

I personally use a much larger suction cup as well as make sure I slide the bottom cover forward so the rear clips and mid studs becomes unlatched. The trick is getting the tabs to clear the slots in the middle this is where the suction cup (and your strength) is important! Pulling up the plate enough so the tabs slide out as you slide the cover forward. I use the 6~8 plastic guitar picks to hold the lid out of its uppercases slot-way.

Focus the prying to the bottom edge so you can slide the bottom cover over the uppercase’s slot-way. Once I get the bottom clear I slide the pick from the corner point up the side about an inch on each side and 4 or 5 along the bottom and pull on the suction cup downward Not Lifting!

Placing the bottom cover on is just the reverse sliding the rear in first, I’ve found only sliding it in about a quarter of way in then snapping in the studs so the stud is not bottomed out in the clip that is what damages it.

This is the guide I used. (MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2019 Lower Case Replacement)

I unscrew the screws, use a suction cup to lift/detach the backplate from the slots/studs (they seem to become ditched just from a suction cup and no need for picks) and then I use my hands to grip the top/bottom of the backplate to try to slide the backplate off. The problem is I can’t seem to smoothly slide the backplate off, it just gives way very suddenly and at speed, scratching the internals.

That sounds like you didn't slide the lid down, instead lifted it up too far!

That could be it. Have you tried this technique? ( https://youtu.be/cOrm48Jh0rg?t=88 ) Unfortunately, I don't have a suction cup that's grippy enough to do this.

It takes me a quarter of the time than what it took him! In any case, thats the basic idea. Look at my images again note the distances are a bit more that what he did.

The trick is getting the edge of the bottom cover over the front edge which is where the picks are to lift it up and over, as well as having a strong enough suction cup!

Another way If your suction cup is not strong enough (like the guy in the vid). Is using fiberglass packing tape placing strips down the side of the short sides with a loop going into a D ring which you can get your fingers into. Then pulling on the D rings to pull the bottom cover forward. Before I got a good glass glazers suction cup that's how I did it. The only negative aspect is the extra work needed to clean off the tape.

Thank you Dan!
