PHILIPS 43PUT4900 - Screen is black, sound works, flashlight works

Hi. Yesterday I noticed that my 4 year old philips tv was getting a bit dim, and then it just went pitch black while the sound / sky was still running. I even put in on and off and the problem continues. I read about using a flashlight and did that, and I could very faintly see some of the tv stuff, so I am assuming that it is something to do with the backlight?

Please can you advise me on how I change the backlight and find Philips replacement parts. Many thanks!

Hi @moso0202

You will need to open up the tv to check inside.

Since you mentioned that when you shine the flashlight on the panel, you see the image, you will need to inspect the backlight module inside the panel.

Handle with care as the display module is fragile

Some Example

Jump to video 1:50 to test with a multimeter.

Below is an example for the parts, for your reference, if you need, i would suggest to search further, e.g. price + shipping to your budget.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the videos and the steps look quite difficult for a layman like me. Would you recommend giving it to a repairs person (not possible at the moment though) or purchasing a new TV - this one was bought for £299 just under 5 years ago and there are similar ones for the same price at the moment (from better companies like Samsung; I notice that a lot of other people with Philips have this problem)

Does this problem happen when you over-use the TV, for example leaving it on for too long, or using high brightness?

Hi @moso0202

No worries, you are welcome, @oldturkey03 answers and explanations are good too,

as mentioned by multiple sites and repair videos, it seems the lifespan of those LED is affected by several factors, e.g. high brightness, temperature, etc.

@moso0202 since you can see your screen with a flashlight you already determined that this is a backlight issue. Two things that can have happened. It is either your powerboard not putting adequate voltage out to your backlight LED’s or the backlight LED strips have failed. All you need to do now is to remove the back cover from your TV and take some measurements at the backlight connector (marked CN8101 on your board). Set your voltmeter to greater than 120VDC and put the red probe ((+) on pin . Black probe (-) measure on pin 3,4 and 5 let us know what it shows. After that, red probe on pin 12 and black probe to 8,9, and 10. Let us know what you get.Post some good images of your boards with your question so we can see what you see. I am not sure if Samsung is a better brand or if there are really any great brands out there. I do know to stay aways from Vizio, TCL, Sony and Toshiba’s. Anything after that is a go for as long as the price is right.
