Why is my computer not recognizing my iPod shuffle at all?

When I plug my iPod into the USB port of my computer and my laptop,it is not recognized in both occasions. It doesn't appear as a drive at all that's why I can't change my songs on it. My Ipod had the same set of songs for almost 3 years now.

The iPod charges using a stand-alone charger though. Please help.
