Heavy CPU Throttling when using Video chat applications

Hi y’all,

Recently I’ve been running into issues with my 2018 MB Pro 13in, touchbar. Whenever I launch any video application (i.e. Skype, Zoom), after around <5 minutes my CPU would throttle down to either 0.4 or 1 Ghz. Zoom or Skype would freak out by saying that “your input device has changed”. Zoom says the same thing and an error message “Zoom has encountered an error and needs to be restarted”. I’ve tried smc + pram reset and so far Skype and Voice recorder started working again, however Zoom is still crashing from the same error(works fine on my 2008 and 2012 MB Pro). Has anyone seen CPU throttling or microphones causing behavior like this? I’m just concerned because ~1.5 months ago I got my keyboard replaced under the program, and I’m just scared that they f-ed up the microphone array. I’m fine with digging around and taking apart stuff, it’s just that the newer models of MB Pros aren’t the most “disassemble-able”.

P.S. I have yet to try reverting to Mojave or a Clean OS reinstall, might try that if this gets out of control. I’m not sure malware would cause this type of behavior, but I guess a “Factory reset” would eliminate that possibility

Update (04/23/2020)

Okay, so I loaded up bootcamp and everything seems to work okay in Windows. I guess something went weird with my macOS installation when I did internet recovery, so I’ll probably be reinstalling the OS.

Have you tried unchecking automatic graphics switching?

@imicrosoldering - The 13" only has the Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 services. The 15" is dual graphics (AMD Radeon) and altering the graphics switching under energy saving would then work.

Yeah I have the 13in. One thing I haven't tried out is checking if the same error happens in Bootcamp.

It didn’t necessarily help, I think I just ended up doing a backup with time machine and reinstalled macOS. It was just a way to isolate the issue to software and not hardware. Since everything was working in bootcamp.

I was in a rush and couldn’t find what was actually causing the “throttling” (the only thing I’ve seen that does similar CPU throttling is when you use certain original Apple batteries on a 2012 15in Unibody MBP).

A common issue I’ve seen is drives which are too loaded up with stuff! So the system struggles when it needs more RAM or storage. My rule of thumb is to leave 1/4 of the drive free so the system can leverage it for Virtual RAM as well as caching. This is more important when you only have 8 GB of RAM. Of course reducing the number of concurrent apps and extras that are loaded on startup is also important.

I have >200GB of storage left and I'm using 16GB of RAM. I've checked my ram usage and there's not that many apps that would cause an anomaly with ram usage. I don't think I've ever seen my laptop use over 12GB and that's not on a usual basis, I have pretty good tab discipline.

Lets look at the thermals using a good monitoring app like TG Pro When the system is running rough take a snapshot of the apps main window, you'll likely need to adjust the window size so all of the sensors and fans values are visible within the snapshot post it here for us to see Adicionar imagens a uma pergunta já existente

It's definitely not thermal throttling. My temps with Zoom running "normally" is <80, now when it does throttle down to 0.4Ghz it hovers closer to 50 but that's from the reduced CPU speed. It's kind of hard to screenshot though when Skype/Zoom bugs out because I can't really do anything with the CPU stuck at that speed, closing Skype/Zoom is almost impossible let alone a screenshot. I've tried older and newer software versions too. I might just reinstall macOS since all my data has been backed up.

All you need to do is have it open in its own window just behind your zoom window (not covering the full display space). Then click on the TG Pro window to bring it forward and then do a screen grab. I do it all the time. Use the Yellow and Green window dots in the left corner to set things up.

If you feel the issue is not thermal then you need to monitor your processes within Activity Monitor. But your symptoms are telling me very loudly you have a sensor issue here either thermal or power. Using TG Pro allows us to remove the thermal aspect.

To be clear this is a process of doing different diagnostics as well as based on what we know based on experience.
