iPhone 4 screen goes dark if brightness is set to 80%+

I have had my iPhone 4 for over a year now, and suddenly the screen of my iPhone 4 GSM started to go almost totally dark if I set the brightness level higher than around 3/4 of the bar. The touch screens keeps working, I hear the sounds of locking or unlocking it, I can enter the apps, etc. If I press the sleep/wake button I see a flash of the lockscreen but it goes dark in a second. After a few tries of hard-reboot the device pressing both buttons and getting the same dark screen, I tried to set the brightness level lower by "blindly" entering settings, imagining where the brightness control is located and sliding down the bar (all this I did with the screen totally black), somehow I got it and after pressing the sleep button the lockscreen appeared and I was able to see the homescreen again. So I started playing with the brightness control and in fact it happens when I set it to a very bright level, and it works if I don't let go the control, slide it back to the left of the backlight bar, lock the screen and unlock it.

I fully restored the iphone, and tested it without installing any app, and the problem remains. I have read that many people have issues with the proximity sensor, but this doesn't seem to be the case, the sensor actually works fine with the phone app, and this never had happened before.

Do I need to change the LCD or any other part? Any suggestions?

I ran into this problem with a 3GS a few months ago. I replaced the LCD 3 times thinking I had a defective part each time. After the third time I adjusted the brightness and the backlight "magically" came back on. Sliding it back to really bright caused it to shut off, and sliding it back to a lower setting brought it back again. Tested it with the other LCD's that I thought were defective and it did it with all of them.

I was really kind of baffled and the only conclusion I could come to was it had something to do with the logic board and not the LCD itself. My best recommendation is to just keep the brightness down below that threshold and continue to enjoy your phone until the new iPhone comes out.

If you do end up replacing the display assembly I'd be curious to know if that fixes your problem.

Well I have been reading a lot these days and found it could be a small part called IC the one that is giving the problem. It controls the backlight. Apparently it is not that hard to replace but you need soldage skills. I was gonna wait for the new iPhone to come out but now the threshold has gone down to less than half the bar. So I ordered the IC replacement, still waiting for it, and I'll have somebody help me with replacing it.

I'll post the outcome for sure

I had the problem with my phone going dark and sometimes unresponsive. If you can still see your icons, then go to your Settings icon and select, then scroll down to General and select, then scroll down to Reset and select. You will get several options. I selected the "Reset All Setting" and this changes my settings, but leaves all the data and content on the phone. Apparently my phone has been going dark for quite some time and now it is bright and clear. I will just have to go back through my phone to see if there are any settings I want to change as it has been so long that I don't know if I would remember what I had them set to.

I had this problem, when the brightness was put up to 100%, the screen would go black (cannot see any icons at all) but the phone was still working. iTunes was able to connect to it. The only way to fix this issue was to do a full factory reset after first backing it up in iTunes. Then when the it was finished the brightness was very low and had to be increased, if it was increased too close to 100% the same black screen happened again. Also when turning Auto/Brightness on the screen goes very dark and stays dark when turned off again. Brightness has to been manually reset.

Any idea what could be the issue???

I have a similar issue except mine goes dark randomly. Sometimes I wake up in the morning from my alarm and the screen is black. After a while it works again though.

First I thought it would really just turn black but holding the phone against the sun you can actually see the icons and everything - the screen is just extremely dark...much darker than when you turn the brightness down to the minimum.

The reset thing holding both the home and the power button until the apple logo appears didnt solve it for me.

Any other suggestions?
