My iMac doesn't respond to anything and the rainbow circle keep chargi

Hi Everyone, My iMac doesn’t respond to anything, I can’t open any app or use the files, system preferences…anything..

Is start normal but after it I can’t do anything else than turn it off

I try reboot with Command S, and it show me I have an '“incorrect block count for file store”

but also “the volume Macintosh HD was repaired successfully” so I guess the problem solve by itself , but no , I still can’t do anything after that

Also reboot on command R doesn’t work

I wish someone have a good answer for me and what to do please

One other point is the iMac from a family member who doesn’t care to loose everything on it , so any solution were the have to erase everything and clean all the rubbish in one time can be a good solution .

Sorry for this long post

Thank you all

Can you tell us your exact model as there are just too many different versions of iMac's. If you don't know look at the bottom of your systems stand for the S/N and plug it into here EveryMac - Lookup

Once we know we can help you

Running Disk Utility directly on the drive won’t fix many issues.

The best way to think this is you go to the shoe cobbler to get your shoes fixed which you are wearing, he can’t fix them with you still in your shoes can he! Thats the same problem we have here, we need to disengage the OS from the drive which needs fixing using a second bootable drive or CD/DVD.

Now with the drive that needs repairs is disengaged we can run Disk Utility from the external drive to fix your internal drive. Even still I don’t think that’s going to do it here. Once I see older systems with drive issues they tend to be fragile as the disk is clearly about to fail fully.

Time to replace the drive! But we have a few road blocks here we need to deal with:

First is the drive you need must be able to run at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) most drives today run at a fixed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) which is too fast for your system. There are some drives which auto sense the systems SATA I/O and match it! As an example this drive Seagate 3.5” FireCuda. Note how all three SATA I/O speeds are listed. Make sure the drive you get spec sheet lists it, if not don’t buy it!

The highest OS-X you can run is El Capitan 10.11.6. You’ll need to get the retail version of the OS disk or if you are lucky you’ve gotten it already and the installer is on your system now. Ideally you have a FireWire drive which you can prep up as an external bootable drive and can then run the OS installer off of it. Otherwise you’ll need to create a bootable CD.

OK so we have a drive which we need to now install the OS onto, but we don’t have a working mac system! This is often the stumbling block most people hit. Then you only have the option of using your grey OS installer CD/DVD the system came with to boot up under and then hopefully you can use the installer files on it to create the external drive and then get the OS updater to bring it up to El Capitan.

Now we hit the next road block! Your OS installer has a time limit based on the OS release and systems date. Apple uses a certificate with an expiration date to force you to either a newer OS or to force you to retire your system. Luckily, we can over come this issue by back dating out system! Here’s how:

Block Image

Set it to 2016

OK, So we got a bootable external drive setup, we got a new drive but I want to recover my user accounts, apps and my data! You’ll need to get this tool Universal Drive Adapter so you can connect your old drive to your system after you’ve prepped up the new drive. Then you’ll use Migration Assistant to copy back over all of your stuff. I’ll warn you may want to limit the process to just the user accounts for the first run, then the Apps and lastly do your data allowing the old drive to cool down a bit between each run.

Lastly here’s the guide to put it in iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Hard Drive Replacement
