2011 MacBook Pro Not Charging

My 2011 MacBook Pro is not charging though the light on the MagSafe is green.

This is the latest instance of the problem that I first noticed about a month ago. Checking on the MacBook through Apple’s own System Information & 3rd party apps like coconutBattery indicate that the battery’s condition is normal & it has 118 cycles on it.

The last time this happened I eventually noticed & got it to start charging when the laptop was completely powered off. Left it off to recharge to 100%. Worked like normal after that but the battery still drained though slowly over the course of days, but when it reached below 95% the battery drain accelerated to hours (now at 32%). Right now it is completely off but not charging as the light remains green.

I’ve tried resetting the SMC, no luck.

Tried unplugging the power adapter for a while, nothing.

Swapping plug locations, nothing.

Tried using a 2012 MacBook Pro power adapter, nothing.

Anyone else got suggestions?

Thanks.

Sadly, the charging logic within your main logic board has a problem.

Your choices for repair is a bit limited due to the virus outbreak As Apple has closed all of its stores. You might be able to find local authorized service center to fix your system but they will likely only swap out your logic board not fix it. And they may not offer repair for your system as Apple was only servicing (parts) on a limited basis on this series.

Your other option is finding a local independent repair person who has the skills to fix your logic board. There are a lot of people who have the simpler parts swap skills, this is different! You need to find someone with SMT soldering skills and tools. There are fewer people with this deeper knowledge and tools. So you will need to ask them if they can before you trust your system with them.

I would recommend you spend some time reviewing Louis Rossmann’s vids on repairing logic board issues. So you get an idea what’s involved infixing your system.

I don’t know how much it means but I performed an Apple Hardware Test & the result was No Trouble Found. Saw that it tested the logic board as well.

Sadly, diagnostics has its limits!

Diagnostics won't test the MOSFET switching logic of the charging circuit. Which is why I hadn't recommended it as it would have confused things. If you look through my answers you'll see I often ask people to run diagnostics but not for power level issues.

The only way to test it is as Luis does with a DVM checking voltages and continuity of the circuits referencing schematics and boardview drawings. And as you can see he is often swapping out the small SMT devices as he discovers failed or questionable ones.
