I am taking apart my old quicksilver machine and for security would like to get rid of the data on the HD-- the computer came with a SEagate 60 GB HD ST360021A
Barracuda ATA IV
can I plug it into my "new" computer or should I get one of these universal USB to HD adaptors that I see advertised
there might even be some usefull data on it

Your new MacPro uses SATA (serial ATA) drives. The old drive uses different connectors. IDE type. These old drives will not work in the new machine without the expense of a PCI adapter card. Just put the old drive in an external enclosure (firewire if your going to use it a lot) (the fire wire will cost a bit more than the USB, or USB if limited use. These enclosures can be found on eBay for $20- $35 depending on the quality. BestBuy also carries them.
You can also connect the old computer via a firewire cable to the new Macpro and start the Quicksilver up holding down the "T" key. You can then open the hard drive on the old machine from the new one and transfer any data you need.

What I would do is just get a IDE USB enclosure, or a drive toaster with IDE pinouts and wipe it that way. This will be easier to deal with then a card, albeit slower.
Get something like this to do it. You'll need a IDE cable, but your G4 has one you can use.

mac4life - We are usually not dealing with Mac technicians here. Maybe your answers could be more concise and detailed. Even I don't understand what you are talking about. I understand the ATA pci card, I suggested it, but that also entails a "Y" splitter molex cable. A USB and Firewire what? External enclosures? Already suggested. It has both firewire 400 & 800 ports built in. Optical drive too? You added nothing to my answer. You're obviously somewhat Mac knowledgeable. Try to convey that to those who are not. "First do no harm". Hope you can help us in the future.

If you are going to be working on computers often I would recommend getting one of the universal adapters. I use mine often to erase or otherwise prep both IDE and SATA hard drives. Ralph
