I need MacBook Pro screen expert

Hi, Ifixit community!

I'll tell you my whole story hopefully, some experts give me some solutions

I have a late 2013 15inch MacBook pro with Nvidia graphics

one of the days I opened it and notice a pink spot on the screen :(

This pink spot only appears in dark/black areas. In white areas, it doesn't appear

  • I've reset the SMC/PRAM and the problem is still persists
  • I've factory reset the MacBook and still persists
  • I downloaded a software called gfxCardStatus to change between IG/DG and the problem still persists
  • I plugged the MacBook with second monitor via HDMI and the pink spot doesn't appear in the second monitor
  • I tried some website solution like jscreenfix website and youtube stuck pixel fix video

Finally, I tried some remedies like pressure on the screen with a pen covered with a soft towel, heat and pressure with a hairdryer and seems like this pink spot won't go away.

Some people told me it is a screen defect and you need to replace the entire screen, and as you know the screen is a little bit pricey and I really love "DIY" and fix everything myself.

So please, could some screen experts explain why this issue happened to the screen?

  • From the display cable
  • LCD panel its self
  • The defusion sheets behind the LCD panel
  • The screen controller board

Is the issue from one of the above?

There’s a lot of cheap cracked screens on eBay, I could purchase one and take some part it and fix my own screen?

@novms - Sorry I was asleep! The body needs it once and awhile ;-}

@novms what you have here is a damaged LCD matrix. The only way to repair this is by replacing the LCD display.

por

@oldturkey03 Thanks for replying

do you mean only "LCD Panel"

and not the white "sheets" or "films" behind the LCD

por

That is correct. Not the diffuser etc just the LCD matrix that is damged. Issue here will be to disassmle it to that level. It is not a board etc. it's your LCD that has failed. Which really is neither here not there since you most likely won't get the individual parts a. disassembled and b. replacements

No, your LCD display its self is not the issue! A pink spot like this one is a noise issue as the dot pattern with it tells us the signal is bad Vs the LCD its self.

Now to confuse you! While I stated the issue was not the LCD its self, there’s more inside the display assembly than a simple LCD panel! There is a small logic board (T-CON) which holds logic to send the needed signal to the LCD so the given row and column receive the signal to create the image you see. This same board also converts the data signal coming from the main logic board through the cable from it. This connection is called eDP (iDP).

You might have caused this with your cleaning! I often see this kind of damage from people who spray their screens with a cleaner and then wipe it down. What happens is the cleaner drips to the bottom wetting the T-CON board and over time the buildup of cleaner corrodes the logic board and its connections.

Sadly, while I’ve saved a few most of the time I have also needed to replace the display on many. I’ll worn you this isn’t an easy screen to take apart to even get to the T-CON board to try to save it or getting a good LCD panel is not easy as they are fragile. I often just replace the full assembly as its just easier.

I agree with @danj here, replacing the whole assembly is muuuuch easier than taking apart these displays. Much worth the extra ~$100 in my opinion.

It isn't like replacing an lcd on a PC laptop if you are familiar with that. When you replace an lcd on a PC laptop, most of the time you pop off a bezel, and replace the lcd panel inside... But on these macs, basically the whole lid is that lcd that you just pop into a PC. Meaning that the part that you just buy and pop into a PC nice and easy, is essentially what you would be taking apart, basically the lcd itself. Apple builds those lcds into the lid, the normal frame that would be on a traditional LCD is actually the bezel and lid to the Macbook. Pretty neat actually. That's why they have such thin lids!

Hopefully that explains something, it's kinda hard to articulate what I mean haha

Thank you very much @danj for your answer I really appreciate it!

Nowadays, There's a lot of video tutorials that teach you how to tear down the entire display and make you able to get to the T-CON board.

Especially if you have all the tools and equipment you'll take the risks.

What I understand from you is that the problem could be from the T-CON board not necessary from the LCD panel

I found some windows PC's on youtube suffers from green pixel/flickering and the solution was they teardown the display and clean the connectors and the controller board(T-CON) with alcohol and the solution magically works!

So Dan, if i purchase cheap broken Display from eBay and take the T-CON board from it and the connectors and put it on my original screen

will the problem fixed ? and what is the percentage do you give that it will solve the problem?

por

Tthe the LCD panel ribbon cables are bonded to both the glass and the T-CON board so you can't dismount the two parts.

All you can do is locate any corrosion on the PCB and clean it off and patch the board if needed. Otherwise you have the display connector which sometimes gets damaged from corrosion, I've replaced a few of them but you need to have a good one to put on.

This is brain surgery! Not at the level of most people have. It still gets down to how much money you want to spend on the needed tools and how much a replacement part costs. Hint getting a replacement display assembly will be cheaper!

por

@danj this is an example:

https://ebay.to/2vYPOC9

a cheap Display from eBay with broken LCD Panel for just 50$

since the problem is from T-CON/Connectors

I could purchase it and replace the Broken LCD panel with my original LCD panel which is not broken

better than buy an entire screen which is around $300-$400.

what do you think dan?

is this considered a brain surgery also?

por

I guess you didn't understand ;-{

Go for it take it apart so you can see this is a no win scenario.

Think on how you can take a hard boiled egg and get the egg out of the shell without damaging the shell in anyway. If you can do that then you are a better than brain surgeon!
