Is it possible to add Thunderbolt capabilities to a laptop without it?

I’ve been wondering about this for quite a while now but could never find a proper answer to it. I understand that Thunderbolt 3 is a complex interface that just uses USB C, but could I in theory replace the hub or port on my laptop with a Thunderbolt compatible one? Or is it more like there’s an extra controller/chip that’s missing in the relay that makes it possible? I’ve been interested in external GPU’s for some time but never had a device with Thunderbolt3, just a plain USB-C. So yeah idk if this question even makes sense from a hardware point, but that’s the whole point of me asking. Thanks for any info at all, I’d love to learn more about it.

Hi @billwithers ,

What is the model number of the laptop?

There's this option if the laptop supports it.

just a thought.

@jayeff Interesting idea but wouldn't I still need Thunderbolt capabilities to use this at all? I've got a HP 15t-dy100 CTO btw.

Hi @billwithers ,

Unfortunately your model laptop is not listed on the extensive list of compatible HP business laptop PCs listed in the link I provided so as @danj has said your laptop doesn't meet the requirements

Hi,

@jayeff . "HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2" is a Thunderbolt 3 device and can only work with a laptop that support thunderbolt . It does not add any Thunderbolt 3 capability.

My office laptop (DELL Latitude 3590) has USB Type-C with display port and power delivery. It was a bad surprise to discover that I cannot connect it to a Thunderbolt 3 dock (DELL TB16).

As @danj pointed out, this is confusing as the same connector can handle incompatible protocols.

I was looking for an adapter between my laptop and my Thunderbolt 3 dock but that does not seem to exist :(

Hello,

I have the same issue, I am an owner of Dell Latitude 5591 i7-8850H which has 3x USB 3.1 (1 with Powershare), 1x USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C (Display Port).

I just checked a product from D-LINK, the DUB-M810, which offers Thunderbolt connectivity through 1 of its ports. Would this solve the issue, or it’s always related to the logic internally of the motherboard, so it can’t be fixed in this way?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Solução escolhida

Sadly the laptop needs to have the logic internally. What is confusing is the connection is physically the same as USB-C but the pin assignments are a bit different as well as the signals them selves.

Sorry I don’t see any economical way to retrofit your laptop.

Hi,

The D-LINK DUB-M810 is equivalent to Dell Docking Station WD15 or WD19… Maybe, you can connect it to a Thunderbolt port, but it will not add Thunderbolt capability to your Latitude 5591 (or my Latitude 3590 ;-)

Latitude 5591 are available with or without Thunderbolt option. Do you check if USB/Thunderbolt configuration option listed in the BIOS  are grayed out?

This is probably a dumb question, but what is BIOS and how do I know if it's grayed out? I've seen the above link, but I'm not sure where on my computer access that?
