Replacing logic board that has more ram because of graphical issues

Howdy,

I currently have a:

MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.7GHz Core i7 (A1398, MC976LL/A) - Mid 2012 Board, Logic, 2.7 GHz, 8 GB (661-6538)

My question is, if I purchase a:

MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.7GHz Core i7 (A1398, MC976LL/A) - Mid 2012 Board, Logic, 2.7 GHz, 16 GB (661-6539)

Can I replace the logic board with a logic board that has better ram? Shouldn’t have any combatibility issues correct? Is there something more I haven’t thought about?

The screen turns on and off at random, brought it in to a verified Mac technician and as they couldn’t properly decypher the issue they think it’s the logic board. So a chance for me to “upgrade” so to speak. Unless someone has the answer to all my display issues :).

Along with the tech looking at the computer, I tried reseating display cables, resetting PRAM… the basics.

Thanks for your time,

Mike

While swapping out the logic board with another within the same series is doable! The issue you are facing with graphical issues won’t directly improve due to more main RAM. More likely you are facing a different issue within the limits of your drives storage space.

Lets assume you only have a 256 GB SSD drive, your system can often struggle if you don’t have enough free space for virtual RAM, caching and scratch space. You really need to leave 1/3 (85GB) of the drive empty! For the larger drives drive no less than 1/4 so for a 512 GB (128GB) or 768 GB (192GB).

So while you could improve things with more RAM the better direction would be to free up space on your SSD or upgrade your SSD to something larger. The less thrashing the SSD is doing moving data around to manage wear leveling will improve the performance of your system working on large images or vids.

The other aspect is the dedicated graphics chip (GPU). The NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1 GB of dedicated GDDR5 SDRAM this series offers is also likely holding you back. This sadly can’t be upgraded. Your only option would be to get a newer system with a more powerful GPU. As an example I have a 15” MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz Core i7 (Mid-2015) Dedicated Graphics system just for my photo editing as it has a much better AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 SDRAM as the graphics RAM allows deeper image work.

My idea was to replace the logic board as currently I have an over priced paper weight

Fully understand... A dead display or failed GPU calls for a new part. I just didn't want you to equate it to being a main RAM thing.

Yes the logic board exchange will work. However:

Let’s first check to see if the problems is with the logic board.

Please hook up an external monitor. If the problem persists, it is with the logic board. If not it the problem is in the display and a logic board will not help you.

I did in fact test that but I did it again anyway. HDMI output non-functioning.

If the HDMI is not working then thats sounds like a MUX issue that would likely need a new board then.
