Are logic boards interchangeable on the Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015?

There are five different logic boards for the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015).

  1. 2.2 GHz
  2. 2.5 GHz
  3. 2.5 GHz with dual graphics
  4. 2.8 GHz
  5. 2.8 GHz with dual graphics

Can I replace a bad 2.2 GHz board with a 2.5 or 2.8 board?

Swap an integrated graphics for dual graphics?

Are they interchangeable?

i too am trying to determine if i can upgrade my MacBook pro 15" mid 2015 logic board with DG - AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2 GB and Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics to a 2.8ghz DG?????

por

@geomatrixx - Yes its doable, but you'll need the second fan, dual chip heatsink and fan gasket as I explained below.

por

Thanks dan I already have the 2.5ghz dual graphics so I think it will be a straight forward swap unless the 2.8 dual graphics heat sink is different to the dual graphics 2.5ghz,

por

Another question related to this, are the Logic Boards from and older 15" MacBook Pro with DG interchangeable? i.e a MBP 15" 2013 be used with logic board from a MBP 15" mid 2015?

Solução escolhida

There are some differences between the IG models Vs the DG models logic boards as the IG models only have one fan and the DG models have dual fans.

I would stick with the same graphics model (IG vs DG) your system is as being the simpler direction. If you have a IG model you still can upgrade it to a DG model. But you’ll need the second fan as well as a different heat sink and gasket.

Thanks, @danj. That’s exactly the info I needed!

@danj: If I understand your answer, then it should be relatively easy to replace a dual-graphics with integrated graphics, since no extra parts are needed.

Does that make sense?

por

@yourmacexpert - Just realize you're downgrading your system, The systems value will go down. Most people go for the DG models if they are heavy into graphical tasks.

You'll now you have to block the second fan exhaust hole, alter the gasket and replace the heat sink.

por

Yes, I do realize it, but this isn’t for me. I want to present the owner with all the options.

(If it was mine, I’d probably be happy to buy the fan and heatsink and upgrade to the AMD graphics)

Thanks again.

@yourmacexpert yes you can for as long as it is the same series. The boards you listed (Can I replace a bad 2.2 GHz board with a 2.5 or 2.8 board) will qualify for replacement.

I have 2 Mid 2015 MacBook Pros.

One is the top-tier Mid-2015 - 2.8GHz 16GB with AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB / Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB.

It's in poor shape, with a cracked screen.

The other is also a Mid-2015 - 2.2GHz 16GB MJLQ2LL/A (2.2 GHz) with Intel Iris Pro 5200.

It's in almost perfect shape.

If I understand Dan’s reply, is there any reason that I couldn't take the logic board along with the second fan and heat sink from the one with the cracked screen and put it in the other one?
