New SSD cant be read after install.

I tried so many things.

Orignal drive works but slow so I wanted to upgrade. I was upgrading the drive doing it via a High Sierra bootable drive I made on my iMac but that doesn’t work. I pressed OPTION on the keyboard and the Installed icon came on. I pressed it and it disappears and thats it. Tried this many times.

I decided to put this new Samsung EVO SSD (250G) into my optical drive on other laptop (17” MacBook Pro) I successfully Loaded High Sierra on it. Tested it by restarting and it loaded.

SO I decided to install this SSD into my 2009 Macbook Pro but all I got is a flashing Question Mark!

I tried using another older SSD. It worked so I decided to wipe it and reinstalling a clean OS-X using Command+Shift+PR etc… It detected El Capitan as the OS-X to reinstall. It wiped the old and started the install the new but was abruptly by a message saying:

‘‘‘This operating system cannot be installed on this computer and to contact the manufacturer etc….’’’

I’m experiencing a lot of inconsistencies. The New SSD works on my 2010 macbook but not on this 2009 MacBook Pro.

I did my research and watched many YouTube videos showing this working. The cables are fine as it reads older drives. Now that I wiped the older SSD I have no drive that works.

Frustrated. PLEASE HELP.

Sadly Apple didn't update the older OS's (El Capitan and older) people still need for their older systems. So we need a different approach! If we can’t get to the mountain then the mountain needs to come to us! Basically, we need to trick the OS installer the systems date is within the certificates date window!

Block Image

And if you can’t get to it from the control panel then you’ll need to use Terminal following this guide Changing system date from Terminal – OS X recovery

After you’ve installed your OS don’t forget to reset your settings so you are accessing the Time server or manually set the date to todays date.

From your other system you’ll want to make a fresh OS installer drive How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive

Also don’t forget your older MacBook only has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) SATA I/O interface so the drive you install needs to be able to support this slower I/O. The Samsung drive you have is a good drive! Unlike many SSD’s today this is one of the few which supports the slower SATA I/O speeds as it will sense the I/O interface and match it.

In Kindness Dan... I dont have access to a terminal on this machone as I dont have an operating OS. Everytyime I restart it starts the installer that doesnt work.

and 2, I cant find the El Capitan Installer ANYWHERE! So frustrating. I'd love to try all this if these 2 options where available.

OK, do you have a friend who has a Mac that can help you? You'll need to leverage their system as a boot drive via Target Disk Mode (there system needs to be running El Capitan or older). Before you start you'll need to have them access the Apple Store to gain access to the OS installer which will be visible in their purchase listing if they already don't have the installer on their system.

Now using a FireWire cable between the two systems we are going to restart your friends system in Target Disk Mode holding the T key. Now on yours power up your system and you need to hold the Option key so you can see your friends HD to boot up from it.

If your friend doesn't have it here's another source How to get an old macOS installer from Apple At the bottom is the links to get them.

Even diskMaker x in the link to this you 'Bootable drive lin' page you sent is an Erorr 404. %#*@.

por

You need the OS installer file to run DiskMaker. If you don't have it, it won't work.

por

I cant locate the installer file becasue El Capitan installer cant be located anywhere. Can you find it? Aslo, (UPDATE) I just tried to the date change. I found the Utilities in Recovery mode. Got to the terminal and followed the instructions. The date was correct to begin with. I the as you asked.... typed in the coade but nothing happened, It wasnt the wrong date and still wont reinstalled the OSX without failing.

Your 2009 MacBook Pro supports upto EL Captain. So You can’t install High Sierra on it. It requires 2010 Macbook or higher.

Thanks for the clarification Ravi : )

The old SSD was from a 2010 Macbook 13inch. I put it in the 2009 13 in and wiped it with a clean instal of El Capitan but it couldnt finish and gave me that message. - “cant installed this oSX on the mac etc…. IS It because the SSD was reading an installer from a possible new OSX? Whats the solution? HOw do I get this New Samsung Drive to be read by this 20009 Mac now? DO I need to buy a USB connector for the new SSD and try installing a clean El Capitan via my iMAc? How?

por

1. Make sure the installer USB is good with ELCaptain.

2. Open disk utility on the start up page of installer.

3. Format the SSD with Apple extended Journaled.

4. Install the macOS.

por

You are likely hitting another problem here as well! If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today Apple retires the older OS's over time letting the certificates to expire. Who ever was responsible to maintain them on the still supported OS's failed to update them (Sierra, High Sierra and Mojave).

Thanks Dan, I'd love to Try this but I dont have an operating system right now to get to a terminal. Remeber, I've wiped my OS and now my ijnternal installer wont let me install El Capitan for some reason so I'm screwed. The only other way is to wipe again and start a new instal using a bootable drive but I cant find El Cpaitan using my App store no matter what I type in... ITs not there. I've search for El Capitan on theWeb and its extremely hard to find the install macOS.app version.

Hi Gents, So to no avail it doesn’t work.

I’v tried to install El Capitan on the old SSD and it doesn’t finish and tell me it cant install it. It doesn’t even read the new SSD. I tried to use the bootable drive to install on the SSD instead and the SSD doesn’t show up as an option for the OSX to install on. : ((((

Please help anyone. SO Frustrating.

Sounds like you failed to run Disk Utility to reformat it to GUID/HFS+ (Journaled File System) I bet the disk is still formatted APFS! As El Capitan OS installer has no idea what that is it won't install.

Don't forget to back date set the year!

por

Hi Dan, Nope I ran Disk Utility aand set it to GUID. Journaled.

Also the date was correct to begin with.

Heres the problem. I cant install El Cap on anything I try using the bootable drive. I even wipe the flash drive and made a new one using the links provided. Didnt work. I even tried a completely new flash drive. That didnt work wither. I even tried loading El Cap on the OLD SSD, a regular HDD drive that worked on my Macbook Pro 17inch, AND the new SSD... nothing. It stops half way through with a message - "OSX could not be installed on your computer. No packages were eligible for install. Contact the Software manufacturer for assistance. Quit the installer and restart... " I get that message every time. Sometimes it will load the installer all the way, sometimes it wont even load the whole installer before this message comes on.

por

I got the same message on both older and new macbook Pros. the years didn't seem to make a difference. I'm at my wits end. Its like there is a problem with trying to install using this bootable flash drive method. Is there a way to try loading the El Cap instal.app file in Applications foldewr onto the second drive I have in my macbook without the need of a bootable drive?

por

Since you have a working 17" MacBook Pro running El Capitan (with the OS installer on it) why don't you use target Disk Mode bypassing the USB port issues you maybe facing.

To clarify, connect your two systems with the FireWire cable between them. Start up your working 17" MacBook in Target Disk Mode (hold the T key). Now restart your Mac which has the SSD drive in it, pressing the Option key. You should now see your 17" MacBook Pro! Click on it so now you are booting up via the 17" MacBook's OS. Once loaded open the OS installer and run it!

IMPORTANT! Make sure you set both systems date to 2016
