Frozen display

I have an i mac (intel) model i mac 7.1; 2.4 GHZ IntelCore 2 Duo processor with a Mac OS X. My display is frozen. I've shut it down and unplugged it several times. I've used several ways to shut it down. When I restart the computer it gears up and then the display is frozen. My mouse works and so does the network. Any ideas about what else I might try? Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks, Paula

At what point is it freezing up? Does it boot all the way up? With your mouse and network working, I would guess it locks when opening a program.

Hi,

You say your mouse works... How do you know, or rather: what do you mean by this?

I sort of have the same issue: sometimes the screen freezes, EXCEPT for the mouse-cursor.

No response whatsoever of anything (no names showing up under the icons of the dock when you hover them, no window accepts clicks etc.) but the cursor still moves!!!

I can log in via the network, the machine seems to run ok...

I'm hesitating to replace the video board, $250 !!!

I have the same issue but installed also a snow leopard version because I have also troubles with Flash setting screen not working. It doesn't do it on snow leopard so I have the feeling it's a lion issue and since the imac is an old one they're not rushing themselves to sort it out.
