MacBook Pro won't charge while it's turned on, only while turned off.

Hello There,

I have a late 2011 A1286 MacBook Pro that works relatively fine, unless for the GPU fault that was properly disabled.

When it's turned off, it charges fine and the MagSafe light goes Orange, and when fully charged it goes Green. On the other hand, if I have it turned on, and the battery is running low, and I plug it in the MagSafe, it goes orange, for about 5 min and, then, the MagSafe suddenly turns off. I have already replaced the battery for a new one and the issue still persists.

However, when I take the battery out and plugged it in the MagSafe, and the light stayed Green, and the computer stayed on without any issue.

It seems to me, there’s an issue with it when it turning over to straight DC power when the battery is physically connected to it and it's turned on. I have already tried resetting the SMC and replaced the MagSafe for a new (original) one unsuccessful.

I ran EFI ASD that gives me a fault in PBUS VP0R that is reading about 0.8 V instead of about 8 V. However, this issue only happens when it is plugged to the battery. When it's plugged into Magsafe, the PBUS sense yields the proper voltage.

How could I fix it? Any Input on this threat would be greatly appreciated!

Gerson.

The logic board is in need of service! You have a failed component in the PBUS VP0R logic.

Thanks for the answer. Could you tell me which component has probably failed? Could it be Q5300 and the resistors? I've been reading something about it but there's nothing related to the issue of only charges when turned off.

Yours sincerely

Gerson

You'll need to get your hands on the schematics and boardview drawings to work off of to debug the logic. Without having the system in front of me I couldn't tell you what needs fixing here. You still will need access to the needed parts and the tools to replace the failed component/s.

Dear Dan, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, I can't send you the board since I'm in Brazil. However, I have both the schematics and board view and I have some tools that allow me to remove the failed component and replace it for a new one. I just wanna know how to test it and be sure that it's only that component That is failing. From where should I start with? Any clues?

Sorry no mind meld possible ;-{

You asking for remote logic board diagnostics. I'm not not able to offer you that.
