The GPU your system has is a different series than what the older systems had. Even still you can get into trouble even with the very newest MacBook Pro’s!

To start with a laptop is not a desktop! So the size limitations translates into less cooling efficiency as you ramp up your systems processing and graphics.

  • So the first thing is to make sure your systems vents are not blocked so cooling air is able to work its way though the system.
  • Given your systems age it likely has a build up of dust and junk within the fan’s, fins and on the logic board its self. Time for a good dust out! Carefully remove your bottom cover and using a small soft paint brush lightly scrub your logic board to loosen the dust as well as the fans and heat sink fins. Use a can of can’ed air to carefully blow the dust away with short blasts.
  • Next is monitoring your thermal load and ramping up the fan to help cool the system. I personally like this one TG Pro it offers some powerful options like turbo mode so as the system gets warm you can set a threshold to ramp up the fans.

While it sounds extreme, I know of two students who did some deep rendering on their 2018 MacBook Pro’s they ended up needing to shove their systems into a refrigerator to offer the needed cooling so the render wouldn’t fail as the charger and battery was unable to supply the needed power at room temp.

So far we’ve talked about the basics. But! The amount of RAM and storage (SSD) your system has access to can also affect it. This is where you may need a system with more RAM (hopefully you have 16 GB) and/or increase your SSD storage so it have more space for Virtual RAM, Caching, and if needed Windows paging. Lastly scratch space if your app uses it.

My rule of thumb is SSD’s smaller than 500 GB need to have 1/3 of the drive unused, larger SSD’s need 1/4 unused. With photo editing you may need more RAM/Storage if you are working on multiple images at the same time or working on very large images. As an example I had to upgrade my Mac Pro to a 2 TB drive as I was working on some very large images (12x20 ft) The image was sitting on an external RAID drive so I could have as much of the boot drive available for Virtual RAM & scratch space,
