How to use Evga Geforce GTX 1080ti as an eGPU for Late 2015 iMac 5k

I got a friend who has bought a Evga Geforce GTX 1080ti and now he can not make use of it as he had to let his PC go for financial reasons. So he asked me to buy it off of him from a very reasonable price. I know this card makes amazing performance leaps compared to the one I have inside (Radeon R9 M390 2GB). I do a very light video and photo editing and I do play games in bootcamp Windows time to time. So;

I use late2015 iMac 27 with Mojave:

1)Is it possible for me to make use of this card as an eGPU ?

2)If so, is there any opinions to how shall I proceed ? (what kind of power supply would be needed, how would I set it up )

Here’s what you’ll need Hands-on: eGPU enclosure + GTX 1080 Ti w/ MacBook Pro – Pascal works w/ macOS, but truly shines on Windows

Basically you don’t alter your iMac system, All you do is plug in the external case via Thunderbolt3 cable and then you plug in an external monitor into the GPU board (you can boomerang the signal back to the internal but its better via the external)

My iMac utilizes Thunderbolt2, would that be a problem ? A simple thunderbolt2 to thunderbolt3 cable would work ?


Well that kills that ;-{

While there where some TB2 boxes they have flown the coop at this point in time. The TB2 to TB3 adapters are not designed to be used this way. I would talk to the support people of the external PCIe box to see they say as they will know better than me.


@danj As 'speed of the connection' wise, I believe Thunderbolt2 has enough speed to sustain this card. I will do as you said and will ask external PCIe box people.

Firstly the 2015 iMak 5k that you got is not a Desktop that has PCe3 slots that you can pug the GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ti into. Your 2015 iMak 5k is an “All In One” type computer that has the graphics card soldered onto the motherboard and you can’t just pug the GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ti PCIe3 card into it, firstly, its too big and secondly, you don’t have a PCIe3 on you board to plug this card into your board!

BUT in saying all this you can do it in another way!

You can purchase a “4 Slots PCI-E 1x To 4 PCI Express 16x USB 3.0 External Riser Card Adapter Board

You can purchase this from either eBay or Amazon and also buy a case for this card to incase the “Riser Card” and plug the GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ti externally into your “2015 iMak 5k” and use it that way!

This is very simple as I’m using an external PCIe 3 Rise Card on my laptop and I’m using it with USB 3.0 not a Thunderbolt 2.0 or 3.0. It works faultlessly and its giving me resolutions of max 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz that my Samsung curved monitor can handle (but the 1080Ti has an output of max 7680x4320 @ 60Hz) so remember that. The card that I’m using is a MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GT OC (Base: 1341MHz,Boost: 1455MHz), 4GB GDDR5 (7108MHz), PCI-E 3.0, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort and it works great with much superior graphics that my laptop has. Stevengenat - Mac's are not Windows PC's! There is no available PCIe bus connection here. This won't work.


While I'd love to make it work as suggested above, I am afraid @danj is right about this one.
