Shouldn't the model number be written on the bottom cover of your mac?

If all you care about is what model it is, go through the following list:
Is it white or aluminum? If aluminum, you have A1278.
If white, does it have a trackpad button along with the trackpad, or does the entire trackpad physically click as the trackpad button? If it has a trackpad button, it is A1181.
If the entire trackpad clicks as the trackpad button, it is A1342.

Goto system profiler. Print All info, go to Apple menu -> About This Mac, write it and figure out which Macbook do you have.
