Why is my fan making loud noises?

Lately, my mac book’s fan is spinning a lot faster even though there are no heavy processes running on the background. And when I open FaceTime, I get a message saying that ‘Video will resume when Mac cools down’.

I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, didn’t help.

The Mac is not hot at all. The temperature in my area is 22 degree C.

Let's get a better view of your internal thermals. Install this great app TG Pro. Take a snapshot of the main window of the app so we can see all of the sensors and the fan (you may need to resize the window) paste it here so we can see Adicionar imagens a uma pergunta já existente

I have uploaded the TG Pro screenshot

Hi Mohit @mohit_20.. did this solution work for you ? I am facing the same problem, would be helpful if you respond !

por

@qasf - Did you install TG Pro as well as run the onboard diagnostics? Did you get the same error code? If you did then you need to have your logic board fixed or replace it.

por

Yes Dan - my problem seems the same as Mohit's. I spilled water on my laptop a while back and now fan is super loud and OS, softwares have slowed down. I was trying to look for a solution everywhere and couldn't understand. Thankfully, i came across this site and read this related post.

OK at this point we know the issue is not a thermal one but either a voltage issue or a bad fan.

Lets try running diagnostics to see if you get an error in the power sensors. Restart your system and press the D key. Let us know if you get an error.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

If you didn’t get an error then its time to replace the fan unit MacBook Air 13" (Late 2010-2017) Fan and here’s the guide MacBook Air 13" Early 2015 Fan Replacement. What likely has happened it the tach feedback long within the fan has failed.

I’m getting an error saying ‘There May be an issue with the SMC’

In the screenshot, the exhaust is at its peak. Any reason to why it’s like that?

por

Did you get an error code?

The Red line is the Fan's RPM (Exhaust)

Try resetting the SMC

por

Tried resetting the SMC. Not much of help. The error code for SMC I got was PFM006. Additional reference code, PPN001.

Also, how can I know that the resetting was done successfully?

Plus, how likely is the Mac to slow down because of a faulty fan? We’re talking System Preferences taking 3 seconds or more to start and to shift between options

por

@mohit_20 - Good! Now I have something to work with! This might be repairable! You likely have corrosion around either the U5870 chip or the iSight camera as the power rail power sensor PPN001 has a problem which is why SMC PFM006 error is also firing off.

You'll need to take the logic board off and carefully clean it of any liquid spillage and/or corrosion.

If that fails you'll need to find someone with the needed skills to repair the logic board or you'll need to replace it.

Would the exhaust at full rpm be a reason for the Mac slowing down?

Your CPU & GPU are overheating, in most cases this is due to dust accumulation in your radiator which decreases airflow and your fan will start spinning faster and faster, so as @danj suggested you need to install TG PRO and show us the temperatures.

According to some MacBook users, this problems can be solved by removing the battery for a night or some hours it's not very clear on the duration, you can check what other people did to solve this issue in the link below, hope that will work for you.

Fan noise, no heat, slow computer - 4SNS

You don't need to pull the battery to reset the SMC.

All you need to do is follow these steps How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

These computers were made to be used on a flat surface bad examples of low airflow surfaces are Carpets, your lap, hot surfaces or surfaces that trap heat such as a blanket. A flat surface such as metal surfaces, cabinets, or tables creates more airflow along with allowing the heat to move to the cooler surface from the metal computer case pieces. If the fan starts blowing loudly it means there is to much heat and not enough airflow. This can mean two things one there is something preventing air from exiting the case, or two there is something sending false temperature readings to the computer.

Thats very true! bedding and carpet can block the needed cooling!

But we are not running hot here! The green bars are below 40º C / 104º F Which is just getting on the warmer side for electronic, logic boards shouldn't exceed 90º C / 194º F. The White marker are the top threshold that sensor has gotten. Not one is excessive!

We have a defect issue here, not a thermal sensor or temp issue.
