White background with vertical colored lines : possible issues?

Block Image

Block Image

The backlit patterns change slightly as seen in the pictures. I had it [“safely”] in its case only to accidentally step on it. What are the likely replacements needed? I am awaiting apple to send me their mail-in repair service, but in the meantime have briefly reviewed this website and am fearful to see some parts costing $200. If this is the case, and there are guides to fix myself, I may reconsider sending to apple and do on my own. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated,

Anthony

Unfortunately, it appears that you’ve damaged your LCD. This is a fairly costly repair, ~$200 sounds about right if not a bit low for the cost of that part.

Thanks for letting me know! I havent found an LCD how to replacement anywhere yet, so please help guide me here— if even manageable, (extra difficulty and time required) is the LCD replacement worth it or is a total display assembly replacement still better of the two? Would you and @mayer still advise fixing this first and then seeing what other issues there are, or is the damaged LCD the only thing that can be damaged here? I would prefer not taking apart my computer multiple times, and paying the price for a new computer with a bunch of new parts.

Thank you!

Anthony

@xibreakitx It's always possible there is further damage, its impossible to tell, especially if it's been stepped on. I recommend hooking it to an external monitor, and if that works, run some diagnostics. If everything works, it's just the LCD. If you're able to source the LCD, it is possible (and far cheaper) to replace that then the full assembly, but it is an extremely involved and risky process. I've only done it once, and it took me about 2 hours in a full shop environment, with any and all tools available. If you don't have access to that, I *highly* recommend the full assembly.

Thank you @raj_shukla!

I will certainly choose the full display assembly instead of the individual LCD if its a challenge, even for someone knowledgeable like yourself.

Is there a troubleshooting/diagnostic guide by any chance? 1) the computer will only stay lit for ~5 seconds after turning on. 2) neither the backlit keyboard nor caps lock is lighting up during this ~5 seconds, and 3) I dont have my external monitor+ adapter with me at the moment; I cant certainly check if the LCD is the only issue, but with 1+2 it seems like more damage is done unfortunately.
